AMES, Iowa – For several Iowa State football players who enjoyed an afternoon of interacting with more than 50 children at the Boys and Girls Club Thursday, it was déjà vu. The Cyclones spent two hours interacting and sharing supper with the young people, setting up outdoor skill drills and then moving inside when weather threatened. All of more than 15 Iowa State student-athletes enjoyed themselves, whatever their previous experience.
“When I was in Boys and Girls Club, I looked forward to meeting the athletes who came to visit with us,”
ISU defensive back James Smith said.
Smith grew up in the Omaha, Neb., area and spent time at the Carter Lake Boys and Girls Club.
“The Boys and Girls Clubs really are a great organization and I really enjoyed being a part of it when I was younger,” Smith said. “The summer has gone so fast. We have been working out and it was great to have an afternoon like this.”
After dinner, there were more games in the facility’s gym. The afternoon was organized by Boys and Girls Club program director Todd Jorgensen and Jonna Chizik, wife of Iowa State head football coach Gene Chizik. Jonna Chizik is on the organization’s board of directors. Executive director Geff Gescheidler grilled the burgers.
Gene Chizik, who was in attendance Thursday, affirmed the positive role the Boys and Girls Clubs have played in the lives of several of his players.
