To me the problem with Brewster is lack of responsibiity. Harbaugh has been in charge of a program. Brewster has been a great TE coach. Never a coordinator. Never a head coach. We need more than a great TE coach and great recruiter. I would prefer someone who has shown they can lead a team an other coaches not a position group.

Actually I think either Harbaugh or Brewster would be great. As mentioned Harbaugh helped with recruiting as an unpaid assistant for his Father at Western Kentucky. Harbaugh's family pedigree is oozing with coaching backgrounds. Tom Crean is his brother-in-law.
I was very impressed that he has a staff in place that he would take with him. That older Defensive Co-ordinator sounds like he would be with Harbaugh forever, that would be nice as they Lead their division in scoring defense. One other thing that impressed me was that Harbaugh always keeps attacking even when he has a lead. Plus he is big on the fundamentals, which we have been lacking in.
Concerns have been expressed that he might move on if he has great success here after 3-4-5 years. I'll take a Johnny Majors or an Earle Bruce any day over decades of mediocrity or less. Being the bottom feeder for 6 of the last 12 years is not a place I want to be. Rather give me some success. If we need to find another coach we will face that bridge when we come to it.

If Harbaugh is offered the Michigan job in 3-4 years after becoming ISU's coach, it will only be b/c he has had incredible success at ISU. Michigan would't hire him away for 7-5 seasons. If we only have him for 4 years and we reach an unprecedented level of success I will take that trade any day.

I agree with JCloned. We will have a lot easier time hiring another coach if Harbaugh would leave for Michigan. The next coach wouold be coming in to a big time winner. And Harbaugh may help name his replacement like Tim Floyd did. That worked out great for us. (For about 3 or 4 years anyway)

Hawkeye supporters love to say Iowa State should be happy with mediocrity and only the Hawks will have a top flight program. If we get Harbaugh, we'll have our shot at the top Iowa recruits, plus good ones all over the country. Harbaugh is their WORST CASE SENARIO for the Cyclones. Iowa State CAN have a top ten football program with the right guy. JP will get the facilities that we need. (Sorry if I sound like the booster club)

I just hope for a program that consistanly is in the top half of the big12 and finishes in the top 25 2-3 years out of four. You know like dmac did......oh wait that didn't happen? After reading all the media attention on the fantastic job dmac did, I thought we were better than we were.
Don't mean to bash dmac on his last week......just standing up for ISU.

...... Harbaugh has his staff picked out and has some potentially big-time recruits ready to move with him. I'm going to get on a couple more calls right now to see what else I can find out... Jeremy, This doesn't make sense. How does he have some "big-time recruits" ready to move with him? Big time for USD? Did he out recruit BCS schools for recruits to come to USD? Is he telling recruits he is going to a BCS school? This just seems like too fantastic of a rumor to be true.

Agree completely. If Harbaugh takes us to even a few 9-3 or even a 10-2 season and leaves....don't you think it will be a lot easier to get another great coach?
Maybe then the national media wouldn't call ISU a coaching graveyard (it's not anyway). We just don't need that perception.

See the post I made earlier this mornning...he did bring some kids in that were being recruited by BCS conference schools. I dont know if they were offered scholarships..but they are noted on the USD website as being recruited by them. He has a few WR's and RBS that look really solid, went to USD over Oregon, Fresno State, Washington.

He has some players lined up since he will be jumping to a BCS school either at ISU or elsewhere. He also has a great staff already picked for that eventual move as well.
|
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. |

The only thing I'm worried about Harbaugh is the potential for San Diego to go and make some noise in the 1-AA playoffs. What if San Diego wins the 1-AA championship? Wouldn't a lot of other schools be all over him, and with much more impressive offers than ISU?

That could definitely be the case. I hope we lock up Harbaugh within the next week.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this site this week after several years on the rivals site.
I don't have any idea what JP is going to do, but it seems that we fans are drooling over the Harbaugh "name". I certainly don't claim to have any expertise in evaluating coaching talent, but Harbaugh would appear to be a risky investment. He has done very well at USD, but there is a world of difference in recruiting players to USD or Drake as compared to the Big 12. Would we still be this excited if his resume was the same and his name was Bob Smith? I would be surprised if Harbaugh is the guy simply because JP's butt is kind of on the line here. Whoever the new coach is, I'll support the decision and renew my season tickets.
GO CYCLONES!!!
