Soccer Recruiting Class Ranked 26th Nationally

The ranking is the highest ever by Soccer Buzz as the school enters its 11th year of competition.

June 2, 2006

AMES, Iowa - One week after Soccer Buzz Magazine announced its conference recruiting class rankings, the publication honored Iowa State's 2006 recruiting class as the 26th-best in the nation on Friday. The ranking is the highest ever by Soccer Buzz as the school enters its 11th year of competition. The magazine is an online publication devoted to women's collegiate soccer.

Soccer Buzz officials also rated ISU's class as second best in the Big 12 for the upcoming season.

In addition to the national ranking, the magazine experts dubbed the recruiting class third-best in the Central Region, behind LSU and Texas A&M and ahead of the rest of the Big 12.

The Cyclones are coming off their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in addition to tying for second in the Big 12 regular season standings, the highest finish in school history.

Texas A&M, the 2005 Big 12 regular season and tournament champions, garnered the top class in the conference and the 22nd best in the nation according to the publication.

ISU will open the 2006 season on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Notre Dame. The Irish were the 2004 National Champions but were defeated in the quarterfinals of the 2005 College Cup by eventual champion Portland, the same team that knocked out Iowa State in the first round.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

We will definitely need them to step in and play as well as there has been some attrition this off season in addition to graduation. A couple quite significant losses. Unfortunately soccer players can compete immediately and don't have to sit a year after transferring.

You have my attention now. Who's left the team; and do you know where they went? Does it have anything to do with Coach Hornbaucher's improprieties? Give it up, soccercy....

Ok Nut, I did a little research by comparing this year's roster to last year's roster. It looks like seven players from last year's team did not return.

Of the seven -

3 appeared in fewer than five games (one of those players was the backup GK, but looks like this years recruits include a real brick wall at that position - she's in the top 100 national recurits or something)

2 were seniors

2 were freshman who were big contributors last year. They are M. Smith who appeared in 17 games and scored 3 goals & also R. de St. Aubin who appeared in all games and scored 6 goals which was second best on the team. R. de St. Aubin is a Minnesota natvie if I remember correctly, and she is moving back to the Land of 10,000 Lakes to play soccer for the Golden Gophers.

I hope this information is helpful.

Go Cyclones!
