CycloneNotables: Monday Morning Quarterbacking - 11/20

Jeremy Lind

I'm starting something new today by getting my thoughts out there for debate, criticism, or analysis. Try not to analyze too deeply though as I'm probably not the most sane person in the world:)

- First of all; I want to say congratulations to the seniors on pulling out a close win against Missouri on Saturday. You had us wondering how it would end but you didn't let us down. Thanks for the memories, as up and down as they might have been. We'll always remember you as Cyclones, whatever you do or become in the future.

- While there will always be room for debating how over-hyped Iowa was going into this season, is it just me that finds it appalling that there are people talking about the Hawks going to the Alamo Bowl? How can a team that finished 2-6 in their conference with no quality wins even be mentioned for a decent bowl game? What a sad day in sports it would be if Iowa goes to the Alamo Bowl this year with a record of 2-6,6-6. I lost respect for the number of Bowl games years ago but no team with their resume should have a chance at any named Bowl, period.

- I know it may not be explosive or overly entertaining, but isn't it great to see the Iowa State Men's Basketball Team learning and growing in front of our eyes? It's early and they're young but they're playing with passion and an eagerness to learn. There will be some heart-breaks this season but oh how you can see the bright future just a couple of years down the road. I for one love seeing the smiles and emotions on the faces of our new players as they go out there and give it their all every game.

- As I've watched ESPN for about the last 72 hours while I've been in bed with a very bad case of the flu, I've noticed one thing is consistently wrong with sports today, nobody is held accountable. Whether it be coaches, players or officials, nobody is willing or able to stand up and say they were wrong or that they would do something differently if they had the chance. When a league like the NBA has to impose penalties on coaches and players for speaking out against the refs, that just tells me that they can't deal with the criticism of having done something wrong or having blown a call or two. I guess I just figure that if a call was blown, somebody needs to be held accountable. If no call was botched, the "issue" should self-dissolve and go away almost immediately. This may not always be the case, but to try and police something like freedom of speech is ludicrous in my opinion. If a player or coach is always complaining, they'll lose any respectability by themselves, why look petty and scared by imposing monetary penalties?

- Speaking of the NBA, did anybody notice that the season started a few weeks ago? I watch it occasionally but it's not in the same realm of competitiveness or excitement as College Sports or the NFL. I get so tired of the egos and selfishness that it's just not bearable to watch most of the time. Some players and teams are fun to watch but overall it's just not what it used to be. It's too bad that there isn't something where you can see player give it their all no matter what the score, oh wait, that's why I love College BBall so much!

- On a final note; Since I've had so much 7-up these past few days, why did they go and screw up something so simple as this? I usually only have 7-up when sick but it's always been the same until they so mysteriously announced this past summer they changed it to be "all natural". I don't care about natural pop, I would have water if I wanted all natural. I want what my mom gave me growing up when I stayed home sick, not an overly lime and sugar flavored syrup that they now call 7-up.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

It's good seeing our team learn. The talent is visible and thats a good thing.

The NBA is a waste of time to watch until the spring. It really is.

And I haven't had the new 7Up yet, what did they do to it?

OK, at least you guys didn't hate my post. I just thought it would help create some lighter discussion in this time of ups and downs:)

I think she's since changed up to Sprite, or at least that's what I've seen in the fridge. I've taken her cue and started getting that when I'm sick, too. Feel better!!!

Whatever happened to the "7-Up Yours" guy?

No, I hated it, but I stomached my own disgust long enough to give it a respectable reply. Jk.
Lighter discussion is needed. Fball is over, lets just relax until we know who our new coach is...?

Yeah, but Iowa is coming out of a conference that people think the national champion will come from. Even though (if michigan does win) will not have even won their conference.

It is refreshing to watch young athletes who enjoy what they're doing! It will be interesting to see how these guys improve throughout their college careers. Some seem to have a lot of ability and a very bright future. Put next year's recruits in the mix, and we may be watching them in the Tournament before expected. Defense is the great equalizer, if you play it for 40 minutes, anything is possible.

A final note about the NBA. It is generally a showman's game, but there are exceptions. Try watching the Suns sometime. They run and gun, play as a team, and truly appear to enjoy the game. Steve Nash is the perfect example of what hard work can overcome. The reigning MVP, (2 times, back to back), isn't extremely athletic, but makes everybody around him play better. There has to be some level of confidence to play at that level, but there really doesn't seem to be an out-of-control ego on this team.

I was talking to some one about this bowl thing too. I respect if a team goes 1-11 one year and progresses up to 6-6 to be able to qualify for a bowl game. It really gets the university excited and pays off the teams hard work to pull out of a disappointing slump that they were in. But when a team is a constant threat for those New Years Day bowl games, and then finishes 6-6. They should never get a bowl game. That team is not living up to par of their standards. It is just a shame of the number of bowl games and the wins it takes to reach one.

Purdue is just about as bad. They are 8-4 and I think the best game they won was either Indiana or Illinois. They beat Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern and then 4 preseason chumps I think. They lost to all the quality opponents and one nonquality being Iowa. And now they are going to Hawaii to get thumped. This is the year to take Big 10 vs. Big XII bowl bets.

And as crummy as this one felt, Cyclone fans, it could be a lot worse. You could be a Hawkeye. - Sean Keeler (imagine that, actually quoting Keeler!)

While I agree with you that the team is young and learning, does anyone else have a hard time believing that we will finish in the middle of the conference? I know we are only 4 games into the season but it seems that we are struggling against teams who are terrible (UC-Riverside, Norfolk State, E. Illinois). I understand these guys are young but if you watch McD on the bench he is just frustrated a lot of the time.

Which leads me to Mike Taylor...my buddy and I were talking about him after the game. He seems to resemble Curt Stinson in his play and also how the coach handles him. He can do about anything and not come out of the game. How many times can you carry the ball and continue to do it??? 11 turnovers BY ONE PLAYER is completely unacceptable!

I think tomorrow's MN game will really tell us something about this team. And I also agree with Jeremy's thought that this team will lose some games they shouldn't but they should also win some they shouldn't.

I'm not getting down on this team yet by any means but I'm not willing to give the basketball team a pass for it's close victories over bad teams. I hope the team learns and grows A LOT over the next 10 games.

Is 11 turnovers in one game by one player some sort of ISU record?

It probably ties Stinson for the record. I swear CS had a double digit game before.
