They are saying that to a public newspaper when they still have games remaining, fwiw. They aren't exactly under oath and there are plenty of ways to spin things even if they didn't want to openly lie.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

If they are talking big $, I don't think it would be Norvell, don't you think it would be a previous head coach. Anyone know whom else was interviewed in Dallas, was it just Harbaugh and Norvell?

Don't confuse Norvell's interest in a head coaching job with interest in Iowa State. Norvell wants a HC job and this one happens to be one he thinks he has a shot at. I really think Norvell would be a huge mistake and would be very disappointed if he is hired.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

Why could Norvell recruit? He has been around the talent in both Division 1 and the pros and has contacts at all levels and has seen what it takes to recruit at this level in both the Big XII and Little 11. I honestly don't think that good coaches with the experience that he has remains loyal to a program from the past. Do you seriously think that he is so big of a Hawk that paying him over a million a year wouldn't make him want to win that game as much as any in the state? How do you think that the link to Iowa or Nebraska hurts his ability to coach at ISU. I hate to quote Ken Miller, but put Norvell's resume under Jim Harbaugh's name. Do you even consider hiring the guy from San Diego other than for his name and taking a BIG chance? There is a large learning curve in BCS conferences and I don't think that any of us even comprehend it. Harbaugh has the fire and excitement that you love to go for, but why do you think that so many analysts nationally are not big on him making that jump. If you honestly think that Michigan would hire him directly on in 1 to 3 years from San Diego, than I would love a drink of that concoction!!!

And as crummy as this one felt, Cyclone fans, it could be a lot worse. You could be a Hawkeye. - Sean Keeler (imagine that, actually quoting Keeler!)

I wouldn't take to much of what the Register is reporting. I understand they have their 'crack reporting team' still looking into the D-1 scandal.

My gut feeling is JP and his staff has everyone like Jeremy, myself and everyother armchair AD chasing shadows. Brilliant!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree. I think the right hire could reignite season ticket sales for next season. I think ISU is in for a tough year no matter what. We need a coach with some name recognition to tide us over until the program is rebuilt. Jim Harbaugh or Gary Patterson or Mike Price would fit that bill nicely.

Well, if Jay Norvell was a former NFL pro bowl QB who had a coach as a Dad who was pretty successful and had served as an assistant to him, then went on to coach QBs and quality control (something we needed badly the last few years) in the NFL, then went on to Div 1AA and was very successful in spite of a fairly big recruiting disadvantage. Yeah, I'd take that. If you started Norvell's resume at Harbaugh's San Diego experience, of course not.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

So you think that some of Harbaugh's biggest points on his resume should be that his dad coached successfuly huh? That probably wouldn't work on my resume even though my dad is pretty successful.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

well you grow up under a succesful head coach it sort of helps you understand the game a little more, so it doesn't hurt that Jim Harbaugh is the son of Jack Harbaugh, because he prolly wouldn't be Jim Harbaugh, former pro football quarterback and all-star if his dad hadn't been such a great football mind, so yea he is prolly right!

I'm just lost at how everyone was all over statistics with Mac and ignored the intangibles and now with Harbaugh are doing everything they can to look past facts and take a CHANCE on a guy for all intangibles.

Because Mac lost substantially more games than he won. Harbs hasn't yet. He seems to have the belly fire and I like it. We need a fresh approach and I think he fits the bill....

Oh yeah - Macs intangibles in the end were just enough to get us here. Soon enough your intangibles have to be reconciled with the results... Mac's didn't balance...

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

Again, I believe that JP HAS to hire a new coach that is perceptibally different than McCarney. A lateral hire WILL NOT motivate the donors...and I know that first hand. A Neb. or Iowa asst coach won't do it, and there will be empty seats and a lack of dollars. You can argue that this coach or that one will win in the future, but next year is the future for JP. Winning with next years schedule will be tough for any coach, so its the hope of winning the following years that will sustain the department. JP knew that he would hit a wall with Mac next year for ticket sales. This hire has to be glitzy and exciting, or it doesn't accomplish anything. With payoffs already to Morgan and now Mac...immediate dollars are needed. REMEMBER THAT WITH THIS HIRE..and put yourself in JP shoes. What coach will:
1. generate immediate excitement
2. sell season tickets for next year
3. generate donors to give money
4. show a the potential for an upgrade from Mac
In my view, it has to be Harbaugh, or a top level coach that we get real lucky to get. We can all talk coaching background...the real isssue is to SHOW ME THE MONEY.

Like the difference between $1.0M and $200k?
