Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

If you are not familiar with Jay Norvell, here is a very brief video bit (taken from http://www.ketv.com - Omaha) from last week:

Whatever happens, we MUST support our new coach with everything we have. I trust that JP will make the best possible decision for us.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

On a lighter note, but of some interest, Norvell has been involved in the production of several instructional videos re: the passing game.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

If that number is on the table, then the new coach could easily be, and should be some of the bigger names that have been put out there. Like the TCU coach. Harbaugh, Norvell and others should start at under a million because of the lack of experience as a head coach on the D 1 level.

HERE IS THE BOTTOMLINE ECONOMICS THAT JP LOOKED AT:
1. Keep McCarney, lose possible 10,000 season tickets net loss $3 million
2. Get Harbaugh, net gain possible 10,000 season tickets net plus $3 million
THAT'S A SIX MILLION TURNAROUND IN ONE YEAR, MINUS THE MAC BUYOUT AND YOUR STILL $5 Million plus ahead. And this does not count donars money...

Are you saying we're going to sell an ADDITIONAL 10,000 season tickets just because we hired Harbaugh? That's a little, um, optimisitic, dontcha think?

If JP feels Norvell is the best coach not hiring him because he was at Iowa and Nebraska would be beyond dumb.

Re: Cyclone Coaching Carousel - Norvell Edition

Selling tickets is at the top of the list for JP. If he brings in someone like Norvell, my bet is people will take the "wait and see what happens" approach. That does't pay for $135 million expansion.

So, I'm sure that has to be factored in on who he wants to hire.

Today, still wanted by BCS teams, he survives as a coach of fortune. If you have a problem - if no one else can help - and if you can find him- maybe you can hire: Gene Chizik.

So if we make a great hire we're going to sell 40,000 season tickets? Sorry bud, that is not going to happen. Frankly, no matter who we hire, I would be AMAZED if we sold 30,000 again.

Unless we revive Lombardi from the grave and prop him up on the sideline, nobody we hire is going to cause us to sell 40,000 season tickets.

Exactly. Norvell just won't sell tickets at the rate that some of the other candidates will. And selling tickets is one of the biggest reasons Dan McCarney is no longer the Cyclone football coach.

Kragthorpe probably has the best chance at being the "total" package (sorry Lex Lugar) for JP. But, that's just one dudes opinion. I'm sure JP is weighing all the options.

It seems to have worked out for Ohio State and Jim Tressell. Why not Michigan?

One thing about Michigan (and other big time programs) : you get to pick your recruits for the most part. No grabbing leftovers needed.

You're right but I don't expect our coach to come in here and compete for national championships. A few bigger name bowls and compete for a Big 12 North title. A win one or two.

From bowl game selections, to officials calls, to national media, ISU plays second fiddle to Iowa and to other programs. Mac did a super job raising the program, but we never seem to get the respect we all feel the Cyclones deserve. With the stature and notariety of Jim Harbaugh, Cyclone fans see hope of that changing. Even with an above average record, Harbaugh may be well-known enough to command more attention for the program than we have had. Status quo won't do it. We need more than an x's and o's coach. We need to be noticed. That is what JP is looking for.
tick tock...we should know soon, eh?
