Cy Competes for Mascot of the Year

AMES, Iowa – Cy is calling all Cyclone fans to help him defend his title as the nation’s best mascot. Cy was named the 2007 “Most Dominant Mascot on Earth” and now will compete in the Capital One National Mascot of the Year competition.

The competition will begin Sept. 8, and fans can vote once a day for the Iowa State mascot at www.capitalonebowl.com. The competition will be a head-to-head weekly battle between 12 different All-American mascots. Cy will take on the likes of Aubie (Auburn), Buster Bronco (Boise State), Cosmo Cougar (Brigham Young), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Testudo (Maryland), Mr.Wuf (North Carolina State), Thundar (North Dakota State), Joe Bruin (UCLA), Cocky (South Carolina), Smokey (Tennessee), and The Bird (Air Force).

The fan vote is the sole determinant of the winner. Voting consists of 11 weekly head-to-head matchups between the All-Americans. The mascots with the best win/loss records face off in the online playoffs starting in November. The winner will be pronounced Capital One National Mascot of the Year on Jan. 1, 2009, during the Capital One Bowl.

As a part of the competition, Cy will appear in the national advertising campaign, which features the mascots participating in the Capital One Mascot Challenge – Top Tailgater, a series of unusual grilling, cooking and tailgating competitions.

The Capital One National Mascot of the Year receives an additional $5,000 scholarship to help fund its school’s mascot program.

Of course I am biased, but Cy looks pretty sharp in the new ISU uniform...

It would actually be funny if Cy won this award and Iowa went to this bowl.

"funny" isn't the adjective I would use to describe that. It would be funnier if they handed the award out to Cy at the Jiffy Lube Lubrication Bowl that iowa will be playing in.

Does the link below work better for you? There's not much to see yet since the voting doesn't begin until September 8th.

Yawn...another mascot voting thing for us to waste our time on?

The only ones that care here are the fans of the 8 schools (or whatever - I'm too lazy to count) that have their mascots represented. And of those schools, the only ones that care are the ones that see this on message boards and start getting all giddy over it. We know Cy is dominant. We don't need some lame credit card company's endorsement to validate this fact.

Given recent history, the odds of Cy winning an online poll are pretty good. Given recent history, the hawks going to a bowl game that I believe gets the first pick out of the big 10 after the BCS, umm, not so likely. (despite what you may read on the iowa boards)

All the free advertising for the school is the big winner here. It is a chance to get Iowa States name out there. So it is in our best interest to make sure he wins

When asked about the ISU @ Iowa game: Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos said. "This has to be the most important game of the year. We've got to treat it like we're playing for a Big Ten championship."

I say why not.... It gets Cy on those stupid comercials that I have been dreaming to see Cy in.

It gives the Cy some recognition, gives the school some spotlight. Couldn't hurt in all reality.

Plus, its something small to brag about. What else do we have?
