Exclamation IMPORTANT: CycloneFanatic Holiday Downtime Planned

IMPORTANT: CycloneFanatic Holiday Downtime Planned

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, CycloneFanatic has outgrown it's current server and will need to be moved over to a brand new machine ASAP. I have completed almost all of the work but will need to move the database over, as well as make the routing changes so when you try to go to the web address CycloneFanatic.com, it actually takes you to the new server. This took a big chunk of change and energy so I'm praying it pays off with the speed and stability of everything, as well as gives us room for tons of new features and services. Don't worry, there will be no noticeable changes besides speed, stability, etc.

I am anticipating the site to be relatively quiet on Thursday and Friday due to Thanksgiving and picked this time for the upgrades so as to least disrupt the end-users. I will outline below the potential impacts the upgrades could have on users being able to see the "new" site during a transition period.

- In laymen terms; When moving servers, the "host" computers around the internet have to register the change before users will be routed to the new server instead of the old one. Each host on the internet has it's own schedule on trying to detect these changes and typically it takes less than 8 hours BUT can last up to 24-48 hours if you happen to go through some obscure connections or routes along the way.

- I anticipate shutting down the old site around 8pm Wednesday night if things are starting to slow down. You will not be able to get onto the site for a couple of hours while I do the final work on the back-end. After this time, I will attempt to set the new site live so that people can read and post as normal.

- IMPORTANT: Each of you will notice the new site at different times depending on the host computer(s) your connection routes through. I will do my best to note this clearly on the old site as well as show people how to use my alternate way of getting on the new site as early as possible. You can type in the web address and you will notice it will ask you to login, although not necessarily. You may also notice that when trying to login or post for a few hours, it could alternate between the old and new servers sporadically and cause you grief. This problem will solve itself after your connection clears out again.

Thank you for understanding and I hope the timing was planned well enough to anticipate a lack of visitors and news developments around the Holiday.

In summary:

Wed PM - Site shutdown
Thu AM - Half of you will have no problems
Thu PM - Most will have no problems
Fri AM - Hopefully nobody is having problems but foreigners might.

Thank you!
Jeremy Lind

Little do you know that JP will see this and choose Thanksgving to announce the new coach!

Fanatic #25 - Its not the size of the green rep bar that matters, it's how you use it!

The data is fine, it's the problem with IP addresses that is out of my hands and I'm at the mercy of the internet DNS servers and how fast it propagates.

If Mike Taylor were making the change, there would be no downtime.

In fact, he'd make the change and roll back time in the same simple step.

Mike Taylor makes Chuck Norris drool with envy.

guess we know who has a crush on Taylor

yeah ip propagation does tend to suck
have seen some amateurs not do this quite right. when done right its damn near seemless.

change site to read only so no new data is added let people read, in mean time copy the data over. new server has its software loaded and looks good no errors have a connection to the old server and have the forum data go offline have a redirection page to new live forum ip. reset domain ip to new one leave old ip up till dns updates and changes go through other isp's.

My Mother in Law is here, my step Kids are here, and my current wife (this may be past tense soon.). They are all from Eastern Iowa visiting us here in New Mexico for T-Day. Now Jeremy is closing site for a transfer, the football season forced me to stop drinking and now house full of "family". I have no way to escape this madness.

I still do have my van down by the river. Please Jeremy don't lets this take 48 hours!

Jeremy, Mike Taylor would have this done already and have already taken a shot and probably made it......
