Cyclones Expect to Rebound

Omaha.com Sports Section

AMES, Iowa — Consider Mark Mangino impressed.

The Kansas coach and his Jayhawks survived a major scare before pulling out a 35-33 victory over Iowa State in Saturday's Big 12 opener. Afterward, Mangino gushed about a program that, just more than 11 months ago, absorbed a 45-7 beating at Kansas.

"I think Iowa State is Kansas five years ago," he said. "They played hard, they played tough. Their coaches are sticklers for discipline and detail."

Five years ago, Mangino was two seasons into trying to change a culture at Kansas. It took time, but the Jayhawks have evolved into one of the conference's elite teams, having won 19 of their past 22 games.

Be nice to read a piece like that in an Iowa newspaper, wouldn't it?

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

Exactly, I have always like the Omaha paper more than any Iowa one. Its sad.

Harriet Michaels: Do you actually like haggis?
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I think it's repellent in every way. In fact, I think most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

Add the KC Star as well. Both those cover ISU better than DSM.

"Basically, it's really simple," Chizik said. "You play consistently all the way through on offense and defense and you don't turn the ball over. Did any of that happen? No. We didn't play consistently on offense. . . . Our margin of error is very small right now."

Favorite quote of that article. Man I love Chizik's mentality and eagerness to win. He expects to compete and win with the likes of Kansas, OU, Texas, Mizzou.

Every yard for ISU!

I just don't understand why the Register is so awful at coverage. It's just unfathomable to me.

There are 2 possible explanations: 1) indifference, 2) incompetence. Probably a mixture of both.

This is going to sound bad, but I have a theory that there is a large portion of the older generation that will get the paper no matter how bad it gets because it's the daily paper. Nobody I know in my age group gets it and is likely not going to get it. Basically it will take a large portion of current subscribers dying off to spur change. The Rag is owned by a corporation now so only once the bottom line is effected will they really start to care about the product.

It's nice to hear Coach C say that he expects and wants to win now!

Just watch the post-game and weekly Chizik news conferences on Clone Zone. That is where reporters get their ideas from. You can hear it straight from the coaches mouth. I think its much more informative and entertaining because there is no filtering of info. Of course it lasts like 15 minutes instead of reading a 1 minute article.

Exactly why I quit taking the Rag a long time ago.

That makes a fair bit of sense.

However, aren't the Star and Herald owned in a similar fashion? And I doubt their demographics are much different that the Rags.

I'm going with the earlier theory of incompetence and indifference. From the top on down.

It probably doesn't take much to impress Mangino. Maybe a big, greasy, bucket of chicken would do the trick...
