ISU Football Assistant Coaches Update

Jeremy Lind

Here is a quick update on some of the possible assistant coaches joining Iowa State. I'm just getting through some of my emails after a day of meetings so there could be more updates, I'm not sure yet.

Offensive Coordinator: Robert McFarland, currently Head Coach at Steven F Austin. (Confirmed)

QB Coach: Major Applewhite, currently at Rice. (Rumor)

RB Coach: Michael Smith, currently at Rice, coached under Snyder at KSU for over a decade. (Rumor)

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

All sound like excellent additions to me. The Applewhite thing would be pretty cool, as I think he is a name that is still very recognizable - especially in Texas.

Arrived in STL via Ames, IA & Bloomington, IN!

Three in one day is moving pretty good. So you got 3 Texas coaches and one Floridian. Now we need one from Ohio, Michigan, and California.

Does anyone know what type of offense McFarland uses? He is a former offensive lineman, but from my little bit of research his offenses seem pretty balanced, but leaning a little toward the passing side? Does anyone know if he runs a spread set, west coast, or what?

I know Applewhite played at Texas, but is he originally from Texas? If so, he's a big name that may have some influence recruiting wise.

There are threads going on this already. Do some searching and you'll get your answers.

Re: ISU Football Assistant Coaches Update

he is from baton rouge, LSU territory some pretty good athletes down in baton rouge and new orleans as well, but he will definitely get the TEXAS fans given his name, and the people who think she should have remained TEXAS QB over Chris Simms, Chris Simms was good but Applewhite had that offense down, you knew he was gonna be a good coach some day!

I thought GC was going to take his time and make sure he got the right coaches. Sounds like some of this was already in the works before he was hired. Maybe he learned that from JP.

Speaking of JP, I think it is so cool that he actually answers my emails.

Re: ISU Football Assistant Coaches Update

i think he just meant he wasn't gonna name his coach right there and prolly will take his time, I think the only one in stone is McFarland which is key with a lot of the offensive players to know what is gonna be around, so I think he had to make a quick move on this one otherwise he might lose some players or recruits if he hesitated on an offensive coordinator

Ohhhh Kayy...
It all makes sense now... When he mentioned some guys from Texas in the presser, he meant Rice.
