Post Raney Joins Coaching Staff

Raney Joins Coaching Staff
Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Oklahoma native Shawn Raney, the cornerbacks coach at Alabama-Birmingham who previously had a successful stint in the Kansas junior college ranks, has been hired as a secondary coach at Iowa State, head coach Gene Chizik announced Monday. Raney comes to ISU after three years at UAB, including a pair of seasons under new Cyclone defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt.

“Shawn Raney comes highly recommended by (new defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt) and brings experience as a high school, junior college and college football coach to our program,” Chizik said.

While a member of the UAB staff, Raney coached on the Blazer team that played in the 2004 Hawaii Bowl.

A native of Erick, Okla., Raney was a two-year starter at strong safety at Northwestern Oklahoma State, where he earned all-conference honors. He also served as a team captain as a senior. Raney earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Northwestern Oklahoma State in 1991.

“This is a chance to work for Gene Chizik and to work with (ISU defensive coordinator) Wayne Bolt again,” Raney said. “It is also an opportunity to coach in the Big 12 Conference, the highest level of college football.”

Prior to coming to UAB, Raney was defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1999-2003 at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan. While at Butler, the Grizzlies won two NJCAA National Championships, in 1999 and 2003. In 2002, Butler County led the nation in scoring defense. Butler County won the Jayhawk Conference title in 1999 and from 2001-2003.

Raney has experience in the Oklahoma High School ranks. After a year as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State, Raney worked as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Yukon High School, where his teams made five playoff appearances and was the Class 6-A runner-up in 1997.

Chizik’s Cyclone coaching staff now includes Raney, offensive coordinator Robert McFarland, defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt and defensive line coach Mike Pelton and wide receivers coach Jay Rodgers. Barney Farrar has been hired to work in football operations.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.
