I like your idea of taking back the media. I think a letter writing campaign might be one way, but it may take more than that.
Another idea would be to expose the injustices on a website. If done on a quality website, objectively and with facts to back the claims up, they can sometimes be a real nuisance that just doesn't go away. One site that was quite a nuisance was the Find Law Tarnished Twenty website. They rated the worst college sports worst programs from a legal perspective. I don't think they exist any more, but I'll provide a link to the archives.

ISU grievances against the press, we would need not to limit ourselves just to the Register, but also should expose any media outlet or personality that place loose with the facts or short-changes
ISU. We could pick on a national outlets or the local guys. There could be a ranking of the worst offenders for the month. And there could be a discussion board that fed off the topics.
