Williams: Signing Day is Over...MBB Recruiting Update

Here is a link to my column in today's Tribune. In it, I talk about a new offer in 08 and address a rumor surrounding Cyclone basketball.

Enjoy and Go Cyclones!

Honestly think anyone would defect to bring Dinc in? I dont. But it would be cool to have a big guy like that aboard. good read as always.

Good read Chris.

On Dinc, why did he go to MCC instead of Indiana? What's his upside/downside?

Chris:
Can you review with me the # of schollies available and how many can be brought in each year? I see 11 guys on the roster now on scholly plus the 4 coming in next season. My math says that would be 14 total for '07-'08.
Thanks!

Not to speak for Chris, but I think there were some issues with playing time and some differences Dinc had with the staff.

He isn't somebody that would come in and average 20pts a game but that wouldn't be why he was brought in anyways. He's more of a presence due to size and rebounding. I think his size and defense would help go a long ways with what the team should have next year. And remember, it's only a possibility.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

I only see 10 on schollie this year:

Clark
Dunson
Gray
Hubalek
Johnson
Johnson
Marsden
McIntosh
Taylor
Thompson

My impression was that you can have 13 on scholarship each year. So with Gray leaving and 4 coming in would give us 13.

Re: Williams: Signing Day is Over...MBB Recruiting Update

I don't know any inside information, but here are scenarios I see where a schollie could open up for Dinc:

1) Hubalek leaves to play pro ball in Europe. This isn't nearly as likely as I thought it was 2-3 months ago, but still Jiri is 24. He'll be 25 next November. Is there a call to get on with the rest of his life and not put up with Coach's berating any more? He'd be missed, but I still see this as the most likely situation.

2) Marsden leaves to transfer to a smaller school to play a level of ball he's more suited to. I don't think this is likely, but it could happen. I don't see anyone else who would reasonably transfer.

3) Academic casualty. Could always happen, but I know McDermott runs a tight ship.

I think with the popularity building for Hubalek he will stay. He is also becoming a better player under McD and it can only benefit him to stay. As for Marsden, I dunno, its a possibility but I think this summer may prove to be good for him. He really hasn't had a full year under McD. But who knows.

You're right - I miscounted... 10 it is.

I also can see jiri staying. He can make a name for himself with two solid seasons and maybe can go NBA since he can shoot outside and do some aerobatic maneuvering inside. Hey, he moves unlike the 46 year old premier dunker Greg Oden.

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.
