MH: Cyclone Hockey Championship Game Thread

Sorry for the delay folks. Took a while to get on the internet here at the rink. The Cyclones are doing great. 5-3 the Cyclones lead after 2. They had a 3-0 lead after 1, but Illinois clawed back after a few penalties went against the Clones.

After the third goal scored by the Cyclones on six shots, former All-American goalie, Mike DeGeorge was pulled for a little used back up whose name may not even be on the roster.

But that goes to show you the determination our guys are showing right now. Every time the Illini get momentum, the Cyclones take it away with a goal.

Pete Majkozak has 2 goals, Rob Tauer, Allen Raushel, and Shane Mytnik have the other 3. Trent baker has stopped 19 of 22 shots and has looked more in control. One more period. It's going to be a classic, We'll be back at the end of the game! See you then!

Great reporting, thanks for the updates! It's great to see the good guys doing so well. Here's hoping they seal the deal!

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: MH: Cyclone Hockey Championship Game Thread

Cyclone Fans, Iowa State Cyclone Hockey is now the home of the CSCHL Champions! In what turned out to be one of the greates games we've seen as Cyclone Fans. I can't tell you how good it felt to hoist that cup over our heads.

No one gave us a chance. The paper here talked about how much Ohio looked forward to playing Illinois in the championship game. Well...looks like we spoiled the party.

The Cyclones won 5-3 after playing the best defense we've seen in a long time. Trent Baker was named CSCHL Tournament MVP for his outstanding play in 3 games. It was the greatest trip of my life and we can't wait to keep it rolling right through nationals.

We'll be headed back to Ames. For now, it's back to the locker room to celebrate. Thanks for tuning in. Make sure you come out to our game on Friday Night! We will have the cup there and a brief ceremony before the game.

Friday Night vs. Minnesota at 7:30 PM.

We'll see you there. WHOOOOOOO! CHAMPS BABY!

I'm sure CycloneHockey is enjoying the post-game festivities but I'll go ahead a break the news that the Iowa State Cyclones are the new CSCHL Champions!

No scoring in the third so the 5-3 match described in the first post is the final. Goaltender Trent Baker had 30 saves in the victory and Majkozak had two goals in the first five minutes to kickstart the Cyclones.

Let us know how things are going in O-hi-O!

Can someone fill me in on what type of tournament this is? national, regional, divisional? I just dont know much about club hockey....but obviously want the clones to win!

Re: MH: Cyclone Hockey Championship Game Thread

all right.. i think its time for an outing to another hockey game!!!!

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

This is a league tournament which is comparable to the Big XII tournament in mens and womens basketball. The Central States League is considered the best in the ACHA with all eight teams in the tournament ranked in the Top 20 in the nation. The No. 6 Cyclones had to defeat No. 9 Kent State in the opening round, No. 2 (and host team) Ohio in the semi-finals, and No. 3 Illinois to claim the title.

The national tournament begins in two weeks in Youngstown, Ohio. Before that the Cyclones will have a tune-up match with University of Minnesota while some of the team will undoubtedly be selected to play in the CSCHL All-Star game on Feb. 24. The strength of the CSCHL gives the Cyclones a great taste of what they will see in two weeks at the nationals!

In addition to being named the tournament MVP, Trent Baker has been named to the CSCHL All-Star team along with fellow senior Jason Brown.

Those two will play with a team made up of eight other CSCHL squads to face defending champion Illinois next Saturday. Full rosters and information on the game: http://www.cschl.com/league.php?scri...ueInfoID=37356

Congratulations to Baker, Brown, and all of the Cyclones!

Re: MH: Cyclone Hockey Championship Game Thread

Well, we just got back in to town after a 13 hour bus ride. Let me tell you, the atmosphere on the bus was amazing. The Cyclones just outplayed 3 top 10 teams in 3 days. It's not often you see a team play Ohio and Illinois, the teams who have traded titles for the last 5 years, and just beat the heck out of 'em.

The CSCHL is THE conference in the ACHA. Typically at least 7 of the 10 teams will be in the top 20, at least 4 will normally go to the 16 team National Tournament. We're talking some great great hockey players.

Here are some stats:
Game 1 vs. Kent St., Cyclones hold nation's top offense (5 goals per game) including the CSCHL Scoring Champion and League MVP Jason O'Bannon. Better yet, Goalie Trent Baker out scores him with a goal and an assist. Allen Raushel records 5 points.

Game 2 vs. #2 Ohio, Cyclones beat Second Team All-Conference Goalie Ryan Baksh, and fight off the nation's best power play unit. Jayson Peterson scores game winner in OT to beat Ohio in front of more than 1500 Ohio fans. Iowa State becomes one of two teams to have beaten Ohio more than once this season.

Game 3 vs. #3 Illinois, Cyclones chase First Team All-Conference Goalie Mike DeGeorge in first period with 3 goals on 6 shots. They also shut down the nation's most gifted line including two World University Games forwards, Marshall Chubirka and Johnny Liang. The Cyclones gain the lead just 29 seconds into the period and never lose it. Pete Majkozak has 2 goals.

This is what we call "peaking and the right time." Coming off of this amazing title run, the Cyclones are ready for the big dance. The ACHA National Tournament. It's gonna be a "Barn Burner."

These were some great updates. This is really excited for any cyclone fan even if you dont follow hockey that closely.

I am curious, what kind of depth do we have on the team to continue this success in the future?

Re: MH: Cyclone Hockey Championship Game Thread

Depth is something we have a lot of. It's why we've been so good this year. Our freshman class has 11 players, almost all of whice played Junior hockey. Many even played Junior A including former Buccaneer Roch Naert, former Cedar Rapids Rough Rider Brent Cornelius, several former North Iowa Outlaws, and the list goes on.

Every guy on this team has played a part in this championship. We are losing around 7 guys next year, so there will be gaps, but the recruiting has been better than ever. If we pull in another class like the one we just had, you might see the beginning of a dynasty.

We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, let's enjoy the moment and bask in the glow of the beautiful Easton Cup!
