Iowa State Men's Basketball Class of 2007

Jeremy Lind

After the dust has settled some, can we confidently state the recruiting process for 2007 has come to an end? Well, lets just say that right now it appears to be over, BUT we know how quickly things can change at Iowa State:)

Now that we know who the players are by name, let's take a look at what they bring to the team...

Charles Boozer
SG 6-3/195
Tarzana, CA - Stoneridge Prep
Recruited By: T.J. Otzelberger
Competition: Lamar & Pepperdine
Overview: Great jump-shooter, good range, above average ball-handling and aggressive. Plays pretty well under control. Needs to stay focused and shoot free throws consistently.

Craig Brackins
PF 6-10/220
Wolfeboro, NH - Brewster Academy (ISU East)
Recruited By: T.J. Otzelberger
Competition: Pitt, Indiana, Mich. State, Illinois, Clemson
Overview: Good hook and jump-shots, plays bigger than he really is, good range for size and very determined. Needs to gain some weight and not get pushed around. All American potential.

Marcus Brister
PG 6-2/210
Duncanville, TX - God's Academy
Recruited By: Jean Prioleau
Competition: Texas Tech, Nebraska, Texas A&M, La. Tech, Cincinnati, Southern U.
Overview: Very physical and aggressive driving to the rim, good ball-handler and self-motivated. Needs to work on the outside shot and get a bit more range. Great defender that should contribute quite a bit on both ends of the court.

Diante Garrett
PG 6-4/175
Milwaukee, WI - Vincent
Recruited By: T.J. Otzelberger
Competition: UNLV, Clemson, Virginia, Wisconsin GB.
Overview: Growing fast and learning even faster. Has a lot of basketball knowledge and is working hard to be ready to go from day one in Ames. Will most likely end up playing the wing quite a bit and has a lot of potential when mixed in with a good ball-handler. Needs to keep working on muscle development as he continues to grow. Look for Garrett to contribute quality minutes right away.

Lucca Staiger
SG 6-5/210
Decatur, IL - Christian
Recruited By: Jeff Rutter
Competition: Kansas State, Illinois, Iowa, Washington St.
Overview: Great basketball IQ, disciplined player and an incredible sharp-shooter from any range. Increasingly potent on the defensive end and continues to work on his English. Staiger has only been in the States for a short while having grown up in Germany.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Next year should be fun! I can't wait!

Chizik: "One thing that I’d encourage our fans…I want them to be the loudest stadium in the Big 12. I don’t care…I want Jack Trice stadium to be the loudest in the Big 12 and I think that creates homefield advantage.... I want to stress to everyone…I want this place to be juiced up. They bought 36,000 season tickets so there is a passion there…don’t hide it…let it out. I want there to be a passion in the stadium."

Did anyone call in on the coach's radio show Monday and ask about the addition of Brister and what that means for the current roster of scholarship players?

I read in another thread that A Thompson may not be on Scholarship next season. This was a condition of his transfer. He'll get a scholarship his senior season or if one becomes available prior. This is all unconfirmed but seems to make sense.

Fanatics,
Make sure to check out my column in tomorrow's Tribune. You won't want to miss it. I break down our scholarship situation, talk about what this means for Dominique Buckley and give some more tidbits on Craig Brackins and more. It's jampacked with info. I had a chance to talk to Brister last night and he is a very confident individual.

Good overview Jeremy.

Even if someone asked McD the question, he would not be able to answer becuase Brister has not signed an LOI yet. A coach cannot talk about a recruit until he has signed his LOI.

I would probably get fired Thanks for the interest though.

Also, I'll be on Marty and Miller at 6:20 tonight. I'm not sure if we'll talk about this or not but if we do, that could be your sneak peek right there.

Re: Iowa State Men's Basketball Class of 2007

On '07...am I the only one that thinks this team will be one of the deepest teams we've ever had? (pending potential/rumored departure(s))

I'm not talking about stud depth, yet looking at the fact we have a lot of guys that will be able to play next year. Take a look at the roster. G-Mac could easily start 5 guys and substitute a completely new 5 if he wanted to. Will it happen - mostly likely never or at least rarely.

However, that ability is there. Talk about a huge advantage when it comes to guys getting in foul trouble, wearing down our opponent, etc.

If we do have the depth I think we will next year, look for us to kick up the tempo a bit.

Consider me exCYted for 2007/2008 Cyclone basketball!

I will be sure to read it! Any idea on redshirts next year?

If any of them red-shirt it will probably be Boozer. He's a quality prospect, but he's really just finding his game this season. He has a ton of upside and a red-shirt year might be the best thing for him.

Re: Iowa State Men's Basketball Class of 2007

I agree with Chris; Boozer has the most to develop still. He's eager but I think he's very willing to take things slow so he has the most to offer in the end. I like his determination and agree that he really is just finding his game. Maybe he could bring big brother in over the summer to help develop his game:)

I also agree with what others said above, this team is shaping up to be very deep considering where we've been in the past. Not all are going to pan out as we hope but even if only half of them do, we still have depth growing at each position for the foreseeable future. With the staff still really going hard on big men for down the road, we'll be well balanced and incredibly deep in a couple years.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.
