Cyclone Notables - 07/08/06
CycloneFanatic.com
Jeremy

There are several recruiting stories developing behind the scenes over the weekend for the Iowa State Men's Basketball program. I am working to confirm a few things and hope to be able to report on them over the coming days/week. Below is what has been confirmed as of right now.
  • Iowa State has extended two MBB offers over the past few days. Besides Diante Garrett as reported on this past week, I have confirmed that the coaching staff has indeed extended an offer to Baltimore, MD PG Malcolm Delaney. Delaney is 6'3" 175 lbs and has seen his stock rise incredibly over the past few weeks. Schools currently showing interest include Indiana, Maryland, Pitt, Virginia, Wake Forest, Clemson, and now ISU. Iowa State is said to be in the top 2 or 3 on the short list for Malcolm.
  • Both Malcolm and Garrett would be 2007 class signees and are showing a lot of interest in Iowa State right now. The current list of offers include Jon Leuer, P'Allen Stinnett, Andre McFarland, Malcolm Delaney, and Diante Garrett. ISU has already secured a commitment from Craig Brackins and is hoping to secure one or two more by the end of July. Garrett seems very likely to join ISU at this time but he is getting more and more attention so nothing is certain until the papers are signed. Leuer, Stinnett, and McFarland all have ISU at the top of their lists and should be making decisions by the end of the summer.
  • With all of the current possible recruits showing a lot of interest in Iowa State, the coaching staff undoubtedly has a lot of evaluating to do to figure out exactly what the best combination of players would be. That question is something the staff is aware of and has planned for. There wouldn't be a weak combination of the players that have offers and it's likely that Iowa State will get a great recruiting class for such a short time on the job. One would have expected this level of interest by big-time players around the third or fourth year of the McDermott era, definitely not the third and fourth months:)

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

So where exactly are we getting all of these scholarships from? If I'm not mistaken we have three left after Brakins and five people we've offered to.

Thanks for the update, Jeremy. Love the "Notables". I too am amazed at the level of recruit GMac & staff are in on so soon at ISU. It's a sign of great things to come.

Ever been in sales? If they all say yes, you can only take three more, but that rearely happens. See Ohio State last week.

It makes one think that the coaching staff is very confident that they wont lose any scholarships due to the other issues considering they are handing out all of these scholarships.

Not necessarily. If I understood correctly, any loss of scholarships for at least the academic issues could be taken either in '07 or '08. Thus, the staff may prefer to get the positions now, and take a smaller class the following year. The old a bird in the hand....

Scholarship offers typically are not with out conditions. Here are some potential hypotheticals:

1) We wanted a post player and Brackins has accepted the offer.

2) We will only take 1 PG. So the staff has told Delaney and Garrett whoever acts first gets the scholarship. The other guy would have his scholarship offer recinded.

3) It seems like Stinnett is the only SG we've offered. The staff may have told Stinnett they really want him to be a Cyclone and he is the only SG they will offer for the time being. They could set an August 1 deadline for his committment. Telling him that if he doesn't commit by that date, they will start offering other players at his position and if one of those players accept he may have his scholarship offer pulled.

4) The staff may feel they can take the best player with the 4th scholarship since we don't have a glaring need at SF or a 2nd post player. I doubt we would take 2 PG's so this scholarship would seem to be reserved for the first guy who accepts among Leuer, McFarland or any other kids we may offer.

And the staff will be evaluaing which combination of players they think will have teh best situation at ISU and will prioritize them by that combination. ie, Garrett, Stinnett, McFarland, or Delaney, Stinnett, Leuer, or any other combination of players

Thought I read McFarland's coach saying he could play as a big 2 and over power others, or as a SF.
