Jeremy
While I was swamped at work, my email box was getting hammered with info that I thought I would pass on. Here are a few pieces of information that I have been able to confirm so far... - Iowa State has secured a 5'11" 195lbs JUCO RB from Denver, CO. Maurice Greer had originally committed to the University of Colorado coming out of high school but ended up going to Junior College due to some academic issues. Greer will have two years remaining when he joins the Cyclone squad for the 07-08 season. Greer is expected to play some valuable minutes right away.
- Jon Leuer has received several scholarship offers over the past two weeks and that includes an offer from the lesser of the in-state schools (aka Iowa). From what I have been able to confirm, Leuer favors ISU over Iowa at this point but is increasingly interested in Minnesota, Kansas, and Indiana. While Minnesota does not currently have a scholarship to offer, it sounds possible that Leuer may be getting closer to making a commitment to the Gophers over the Clones, or could put off a decision until Minnesota is better suited to take him. The University of Iowa has been pushing Leuer pretty hard over the past two weeks especially but are not currently near the top of his list.
- Recent MBB Recruiting target Diante Garrett is said to be getting a lot of pressure from Clemson, Tennessee, and Virginia to make a commitment sometime soon. While all three are pushing hard, Garrett still has to qualify and is not guaranteed to do so on the first try. From a conversation I had earlier this evening, it seems very evident that Iowa State is not only near the top of the list for Diante, but they are the list as far as he's concerned right now.
- A quick update on the other recent MBB newsmaker, Point Guard Malcolm Delaney. Delaney's phone has recently been ringing off the hook by potential schools and he's seen a flurry of interest following solid play thus far in the summer. Delaney currently has Iowa State, Maryland, Indiana, Clemson, and Pitt as his top five, according to one insider. Iowa State is not currently the top choice but they are at least gaining ground. Delaney is not expected to make a decision until sometime in August and will have a much tougher time then as he will likely see many more offers if he keeps his recent level of play up.
- Iowa State is making a lot of headway in recruiting for both Men's Basketball and Football. A flurry of action has been happening behind the scenes and a lot of visits are taking place by the coaching staffs. I would expect the next two weeks to be very intense in terms of recruiting and possible commitments. I am working on getting some clarification and confirmation on a pretty decent recruiting story right now...

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. |

If Leuer is still strongly considering the Gophers, it must be a given that he's going there. It would have to be out of pure loyalty, maybe growing up wanting to be a Gopher. He'd be committing to a program that's going nowhere and that will be getting a new coach next year. Seriously, the Star Trib actually ran a front page (not just of the sports but of the entire paper) story breaking the news that Monson had been fired a few months back. They had a number of related articles in the sports as well about Monson's career, etc. Seems, though, that the AD got cold feet (can you say, too much of a buyout$$?) but one more year gone will do the trick next year.
To sum it up, based on what I've seen on this and other sites about Leuer leaning to the Goophers, I'd say he's gone.

I really don't have a lot of new news this morning about Leuer but I do think it's increasingly likely he won't be a Cyclone. I think he'll either go to Minn or possibly Kansas. Niether has a scholarship to offer right now but if he is promissed one, he would jump at the offer.

Looks like recruiting Alex Thompson will work out in the end. The biggest hole in the future Clones remains the inside game. And good for Brackins. And Jessan surgery may take longer to heal than expected. And we still hope our centers can jump higher and block some shots and take some charges. We would expect MCD to utiulize slice and dice guard play until the inside game develops. Our biggest improvement may come on the defensive end and not the offensive end. | EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job.
