I think Iowa is in for a big effing shock. I was just over at HR and some of them honestly believe that Phil Jackson and John Wooden are coming to save Iowa BBall. They will be lucky if they even get anyone that excites the fan base. The only real option that they have is to get a head coach from a mid-major. None of them want that because SA was such a big bust. The guy that they really wanted is on our bench, so who exactly are they going to get?
All of them are also crediting Barta for this. Barta didn't do anything and lucked out of a big pile of his own crap. Barta still can't even hold Pollards old, used chewing gum. Barta got lucky, plus he's nevered hired on a stage like this before.
Several of them also think that they now will be NCAA bound in 08 too. Iowa is going to be losing all of the recruits they had as well as some players. They are gonna be worse off than we were this year. They will be lucky to be .500 in two years.
| Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?

The lack of a strong President at EIU will make Barta's job a lot harder than JP had a year ago. The EIU group will make them have various committees weigh in before they can hire anyone and have open meeting interviews, etc. JP got to pick who he wanted and the flexibility to go get his man. Barta will not have the same chance. It will be the same process that got us Wayne Morgan. It will be fun to watch for us!

Poor NM..they might as well start drinking now.And if I were them, I am not sure if that would even help me deal with him being the coach.

It sounds a lot like ISU hiring Morgan if it happens.

I hope Iowa handles their coaching search as poorly as they handled their president search.

The best chances they have are guys like Chris Lowery, SIU, could possibly try a guy like Mark Turgeon, Wichita State, just to name a few. They aren't going to get an established major coach that is for sure. It will be an assistant or a mid major kind of guy. Hopefully they screw up and hire a guy that will sacrifice the program. In the long run I believe it is the Iowa fans that truly screwed things up opposed to Alford. Not making the guy out to be a saint, but he wasn't an awful coach, what he was was an awful recruiter, plain and simple. Hopefully a place like New Mexico will suit him better.

The problem with Alford at iowa was that fans expected big things from him right at the get-go. I think he learned a lot over his 8 years at iowa, and he'll likely be pretty successful at NM. But by the time he turned into a good coach, the fan base had already turned against him. He just needed time to develop as a coach at the Division I level. Most coaches get that as assistants. Alford never did.
He knew next year was either going to give him a nice extension, or get him canned. More than likely, the latter.
Since his days in Indiana HS basketball, he has been treated like a god, and he didn't understand why that didn't happen at iowa. He says he wants to be at a basketball school, not a football school. What he doesn't understand is that, if he had been successful at the beginning of his tenure, iowa could have been BOTH. The "type" of school is dictated by success, and success only. It is a fan and media mindset, in most cases. ISU is considered a basketball school, due to its success in basketball and its lack thereof in football. Florida was the opposite for a long time. Do people still consider Florida a football school? Sure, but that is definately changing.......
