AMES, Iowa--Iowa State junior guard Mike Taylor won Ralph A. Olsen Most Valuable Player Award honors at the 2006-07 Iowa State men’s basketball banquet Sunday evening.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Taylor finished his first season with the Cyclones as one of the best shooters in the Big 12 Conference, leading
ISU in scoring (16.0 ppg), assists (4.51 apg), steals (35) and 3-pointers (77). Taylor’s 77 treys is the sixth-best single-season total in school history and his 2.48 3-pointers made per game average ranked fifth in the league. Taylor, who ranked 10th in the Big 12 in scoring and fifth in the league in assists, is one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in school history. He made six treys in a game three times, tying for eighth on the single-game school charts, and he netted at least one 3-pointer in his final 27 games, breaking the school record for consecutive games with a trey. Taylor was named honorable mention all-Big 12 by both the AP and Coaches.
Junior Rahshon Clark won the Brian Pearson Inspiration Award. Clark, a native of Queens, N.Y., was the only Cyclone to start all 31 games, averaging 6.4 points and 5.9 rebounds. Clark, whose experience and leadership was extremely valuable to the young team, is one of
ISU’s all-time leaders in steals (14th-120) and blocks (8th-73).
Wesley Johnson and Jiri Hubalek were winners of the Outstanding Rebounder and Most Improved Player Award, respectively. Johnson, a freshman from Corsicana, Texas, was one of the best rebounders in the Big 12 as a rookie. Johnson ranked fourth in the league in rebounding (7.9 rpg), tallying the second-best
ISU freshman total and the sixth-most boards for a Big 12 rookie in conference history with 244. He was named to the Big 12 all-Rookie team and was a honorable mention freshman All-American by Collegehoops.net.
Hubalek, who hails from Prague, Czech Republic, averaged 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds, an improvement from 8.6 ppg and 3.9 rpg a year ago. A second-team academic all-Big 12 honoree, the junior ranked 10th in the Big 12 in rebounding and was second on the team with four double-doubles.
