Re: Little Brother Coaching Rumor

In regards to getting beat by Creighton on Stinnett, it is important to remember that P'Allen was Wayne's project. The fact that Greg almost got him to ISU at all in the absence of Morgan is amazing but I guess I'm not surprised that P'Allen opted to go elsewhere. And given the new info on Stinnett, I'm glad he did go elsewhere.

Kenton Walker, though, appears to be someone ISU could use. I'm all for making another run at Walker should he free himself from Creighton.

Also, if Iowa does get Altman, I think it is a good find. I'm still not sure why Altman would leave the situation he was in for IC, though. Must be the money.

With the "beat Iowa for a successful season" mentality...that's true.

If we lost to Iowa 10 years in a row but made the NCAA tournament each of those years...I could care less.

Creighton can attract a good coach...why would Altman's assistant automatically be promoted to Head Coach? How often does that happen? Not very...

We tried it and it didn't work out so well.

They'll have to. He's already making more than 900K a year at Creighton (I've heard 1.2 Mil gauranteed income with the contributions from Omahas "Coaches Circle"). He plays in front of a sold out Qwest Center every game, and is a God in Omaha. They'll need to lure him with low expectations and lots of money in my opinion.

He's a fool if he believes the low expectations will last long. He's got it better in Omaha.

Completele irrelavent who you would or would have had. We tried to get Walker and Stinnett and Altman got them first.

And by the way, ISU's recruiting class was also formed by a new coaching staff that was already very far behind the competition and it's still going to be a Top 25 recruiting class, far higher than Creighton's with a veteran coach.
This is a perfectly valid point and is why getting beat by Creighton was not a big deal.

The first point you make just makes us sound like the Iowa fans we complain about saying how we didn't want that recruit anyway.

So I think we'll all agree McKenna leaving means one of two things:
1) Altman is staying, so McKenna gets his head coaching job
2) Altman is leaving and McKenna won't be the replacement.

I don't think it really says anything about Altman's intentions.
Totally true. Only thing is McKenna was a very successful coach at UN-omaha and is an alumni. If he wanted the job, it's hard to turn down someone with talent who is connected to the alumni and school already. For example, if Fred Hoiberg wanted ISU's job someday, think he'd get it or at least be given a very hard look? That being said I have no idea if McKenna has a good relationship with the current AD at CU or how he is percieved by fans. Have never heard anything bad, fwiw. Just seems strange you would turn away former star player that is a good coach.

Yes, that is a recruiting loss. It certainly isn't a win. And it isn't a bad loss either whatsoever.

Regarding this hire, if it is true:

How do you all think this compares to us hiring McDermott? While Altman won't get the fan base excited and won't get as much support as we gave and are in the process of giving McDermott, what else makes this hire much different than ours?

He sounds like a guy who wants to stay in the midwest, so there's a good possibility he wouldn't bolt for another job (unless their fans run him off, too). He was a very successful MVC coach, and people are questioning his ability to recruit on a national level. I think the only difference is that Altman has previous head coaching experience in a big time conference while McDermott did not. Altman wasn't overly successful at it and McDermott's grade is incomplete.

All along I felt that the best hires Iowa could make would be Altman or Lowery, and between the two, I'm glad it's Altman.

Sorry to mess up your Stinnett conversation, but I'm hearing Majerus. That will happen in the next week.

Except he won't be judged solely on his ability to beat Iowa. Even less so in basketball than in football.

Where are you hearing that? His doc won't even let him cross the street let alone coach...

If he gets hired there will be a running bet on how many games it takes for him to collapse on the court.

I heard from a Hawkeye that Pearl would be their coach. Then Gillespie. Some think it should be B.J. Armstrong.

One thing I've learned in coaching searches, you can't trust what many people are saying because most likely they're either two kinds of people...

- They're blinded by team loyalty and can't make rational judgments on who will be the next coach.
- The information they are getting is only based on speculation, wild rumors or deliberately leaked info to make you think one thing when it's actually another.

There are actually few people that get the correct information. And even then, they don't get it until the 11th hour.
