Little Brother Coaching Rumor

Not ISU news directly but it involves our little brother out East...

It is being RUMORED that Altman will be announced today or tomorrow in Iowa City.

If it really is Altman, it's kind of odd that they formed an expensive search committee to find a guy that called them Not quite "Pollardesque" in my opinion.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Wow, I would stay put if I was that guy. He makes some serious coin out there with less expectation than the Pukeyes will have for him.

If that's true, I'm glad we beat them to the punch on selecting a Missouri Valley coach.

There's a storm brewin', and it's named Cyclone Gene.

It was rumored that he wanted $1.5mil and I would say that's a little high without a solid recruiting resume outside of the midwest :)

No WAY Iowa pays him more than 900K a year. You have to be kidding me, he is a good coach...but he will get TORN apart in Iowa City if he cant win games in the Big 10. I dont see this as a good hire at all

Ummm well, Altman sort of out-recruited Iowa State this year in getting Kenton Walker and P'Allen Stinnett. I don't know how you can bash on his recruiting when he did just as good if not better than we did.

It's strange. It seems like they targeted Pearl from day one. He said no, so they put together a search committee to "find" their 2nd guy - Altman.

They guy just hours away that many were telling them they should hire. Very curious.

Altman does have the potential to be very good for Iowa.

He did not out-recruit ISU in any way. I would take Brackins and any one of our guards over Walker and Stinnett. P'Allen also just got kicked out of school so we'll see how well that turns out. We've known since day one he had an extreme altitude problem and I would love to see him go to Iowa City with Altman so we can see some huge distractions for their team.

And by the way, ISU's recruiting class was also formed by a new coaching staff that was already very far behind the competition and it's still going to be a Top 25 recruiting class, far higher than Creighton's with a veteran coach.

Re: Little Brother Coaching Rumor

OK, follow me here. Everyone was all excited that Beas Hamga reopened his recruitment after Alford left for NM, but apparently he's not considering ISU and/or ISU is not considering him. But suppose the Altman to Iowa rumor is true. Do y'all think Kenton Walker (mentioned earlier) would reopen his recruitment? With the mystery guard leaving, we'd have a scholarship, and Walker was one of the guys I really wanted us to get way back when. He'd have to ask to be released (as far as I understand) before we could even talk to him since he's signed his LOI, but if he did reopen his recruitment, would McD take another look at him? Don't you guys just love the rampant speculation? :P

Jeremy are you hearing any rumors about whether ISU is done recruiting for 2007?

Good point, and he flat-out owned McD at Creighton. I think it will be a different situation when he gets to IC, but we'll see.

Good point here as well, it will be interesting to see the fallout from the coaching moves. Let's hope!

Re: Little Brother Coaching Rumor

To say he didn't out recruit us in respect to Walker and Stinnett, IMO isn't completely accurate.

We offered both of these players. They sure seemed like serious offers to me. Both decided to commit to Altman at Creighton.

Why? Now this answer (if one exists) could support the feeling we were not out recruited. It may have boiled down to playing time and little competition for a starting role. At ISU, looked like both Walker and Stinnett would have to compete for playing time and maybe a starting spot. At Creighton, it didn't look to the the case.

However, if Altman had guys that were playing better than one or both of these two recruits, he'd put them on the bench as would any coach. And in Ames, if these two would've been playing the best - they would start.

To justify us not getting Stinnett by his recent troubles at school, I think is unfair. Does it look better now that we didn't get him? Yeah. But that doesn't change the fact that we recruited him pretty hard prior to him going elsewhere.

Re: Little Brother Coaching Rumor

My own personal take on the recruiting competition between Altman and McD is that it was a split. I think McD knew that Stinnett could be a liability so he let him go. I don't think McD got out-recruited there. However, I think Walker slipped through his fingers and that Altman won that one. McD still got Brackins, Staiger, Brister, Garrett, and Boozer, and that to me is a solid class and enough to tip the scales in McD's favor.
