The season is up on us, as the buses from Toledo roll into Ames. Will
ISU come out of the gates slowly? Can they finally get over the hump that is the Big 12 North title? Is this the year they take down a southern powerhouse in Texas or Oklahoma? Well ladies and gentlemen, this ride is worth the wait!
Toledo vs. ISU
Anyone wondering how
ISU would respond to losing their last 2 games of the '05 season in heart-breaking fashion – those questions were answered early and often.
ISU's offense takes the ball first and is celebrating in the end zone after a mere three plays from scrimmage. A Stevie Hicks run off the left side for 15, a run up the middle for 5 put
ISU and 2nd and 5. The 2nd down play…
"
ISU comes out in the 3 wide set. Play action fake to Hicks, Meyer drops back. Looks down field – cocks and fires a deep, deep ball. He has Blythe open…caught! Blythe at the 20…10...5…TOUCHDOWN CYCLONES!"
A fumble on Toledo's first possession recovered by Adam Carper resulted in another quick
ISU score.
"
ISU lines up in the I from the 23. Hand-off to Hicks off the left side – he finds a seem. Cuts back, he has daylight! 10…5…TOUCHDOWN! The Cyclones have roared out to a 14-0 lead with 10 minutes still remaining in the first quarter!"
The Rockets were never able to lift off, unable to recover from
ISU's early success. Kock, Flynn and Harris got into the scoring action as well as a more from Stevie. Could not have started the season much better.
Final – ISU 48 Toledo 13 UNLV vs. ISU
Fans expected another drubbing after last week's beat-down of Toledo. While the final score showed a good margin, things did not go real swell for
ISU early on.
An opening kickoff return for a touchdown got UNLV on the board early and fans a bit uneasy. After an
ISU 29 yard field goal generated by a 40 yard catch from Sumrall, UNLV had the ball back. An interception by Jackson was negated by a pass interference penalty. Three plays later, UNLV was celebrating again after a score. With
ISU down 11, Coach Mac was fuming. The Cyclones and Rebels traded a few punts to take us to the 3 minute mark before half.
ISU still down 11 with the ball, needed to get something going before the break. And they did.
On third and 20, after a holding penalty on 2nd down, Meyer created some Jack Trice magic.
"Meyer back to pass – looking…looking. Moves to the right, getting pressure from the left side. He's got an end barreling down on him – Meyer takes off to the right – hit – breaks the tackle! Cross the line of scrimmage, dances back toward the middle of the field – spins out of an arm tackle. This could go! He's past midfield, one man to beat…at the 30…25…ahhh…pushed out of bounds at the 19. What a run by Bret Meyer!"
Two plays later Meyer finds Walter Nickel in the end zone to bring the halftime deficit to 4.
After the half,
ISU came out with the same energy they show late in the first. Getting the ball first, the Cyclones struck gold early.
"Meyer back to pass, looking down field. He's got Hamilton all alone! Lets it go, looks a bit long – Hamilton lays out for the ball………..CAUGHT at the 7! WOW, what a grab by Marquis Hamilton!"
After the 42 yard reception, two handoffs to Ryan Kock gave
ISU their first lead of the evening – 17-14. They never looked back and the
ISU defense didn't allow the Rebels to cross midfield the entire second half.
Final – ISU 34 UNLV 14 ISU vs. Iowa
The game the entire state has been waiting for…and for that matter…parts of the nation. Just 2 weeks before the game, vandals defaced the
ISU billboard located in Cedar Rapids, putting
ISU and the billboard once again on the front page of the local media – even getting a little press on ESPN.
Said Pollard after finding out of the incident, "I guess we ticked off a few fans in Eastern Iowa. Maybe I should thank whoever did it, for getting us on ESPN."
#18 Iowa comes into the game with a newly defined importance for September games – still smarting after the 23-3 beating they took in Ames last year. The Cyclones roll into Iowa City lose and ready to play – Meyer and the offense eager to test the Hawkeye corners. Game on – no punches will be pulled by either side on this day.
Getting right to the good stuff…
4 minutes left in the game. Score – Iowa 27
ISU 21.
ISU had led most of the day until a Tate-to-Chandler touchdown pass put them ahead. With 80 yards to go and thousands of Hawkeye fans on their feet, screaming – a tough task lies ahead.
Meyer's been in this spot before but as a freshman. He leads the offense onto the field with a swagger a QB needs to have. An incomplete pass to Barkema starts the drive, followed by a nifty run from Hicks to pick up a first down. Two unsuccessful runs later,
ISU is looking at a 3rd and 7.
"Meyer back to pass, heavy pressure! He rolls left – can't find anyone. Suddenly he fires the ball toward the middle of the field. CAUGHT by Todd Blythe! Wow, the pass went over the head of a Hawkeye linebacker, was a little behind Todd and he was able to make the catch for 11 yards and a first down!"
With 2 minutes left and
ISU only at midfield, the ball needed to move faster. Mac then did something we've rarely seen from
ISU – pulled Hicks from the game and went to a 4 wide, 1 tight set.
Sending the Hawks spiraling downward into a serious state of confusion – Meyer picked his way downfield at ease. Completions to Flynn, Nickel and Sumrall put
ISU inside the 20 with 45 seconds to play.
The Cyclones tried Meyer on a QB draw and yielded an 8 yard pickup. A sack on 2nd down resulted in a 2 yard loss and a timeout with 22 to play. 3rd down and 2 from the 10.
"Kinnick is on it's feet – the crowd noise is deafening. 3 wide, two tight this time – Meyer back to pass. He rolls right – has a man streaking the back of the end zone…..fires…caught…TOUCHDOWN IOWA STATE! Meyer found Austin Flynn moving with him step-for-step and put it right in his chest. The Cyclones steal one from Iowa and it looks like Pollard will be putting up a new billboard!"
The Cyclones once again begin the season 3-0 and make their splash in the polls at #23.
Final – ISU 28 Iowa 27 ISU vs. Texas
After a thrilling victory in Iowa City a week ago, it was time for Iowa State to once again go into unfriendly territory, this time into the home of the defending National Champions. While not the same team since Vince Young's departure, this Longhorn squad is no slouch – having defeated Ohio State 2 weeks ago. Can Iowa State even hang with these Horns?
Texas takes the ball first and here is the call from their 5th play from scrimmage.
"McCoy back to pass, fires one across the middle…it's…intercepted! Bowen has the ball with plenty of green in front of him. He's at the 25…20…15…10……5…..TOUCH-DOWN! Can you believe it?"
Cyclone fans at home are on their feet – screaming at one another. But, this is only the beginning.
Texas followed the defensive score by
ISU with one of their own, picking up a Meyer fumble after a sack and returning it for a TD. A Cyclone 3-and-out gave the ball back to the Longhorns, who drove 76 yards for another score and a 7 point lead. In the ensuing drive,
ISU marched the ball to midfield only to stall after 3 straight incomplete passes, giving the ball back to Texas with 3 minutes to play in the half.
The Longhorns were able to add a 43 yard field goal as time expired, giving them a 17-7 lead going into the locker room. Cyclone fans begin to wonder if their short-lived success in Austin was over.
Coming out of the half, both teams seemed sluggish, trading punts on their first 2 possessions. With
ISU getting the ball back, time was ticking away with the 3rd quarter about to close. That's when the Todd Blythe show began…
"Meyer back to pass, fires a ball across the middle – caught by Todd Blythe. Breaks an arm tackle, cuts back to the right side of the field…down the sideline! He's got a Longhorn barreling down on him…stiff-arm to the ground! Wow…Todd's alone at the 15…10…5…touchdown Cyclones! What a run after the catch by Todd Blythe – this guy is special!"
Shown on camera after the celebration, Todd goes right to the defense – already in the huddle – and appear to give some inspirational words. Said after the game, "I just told 'em it was time for Cyclone pride. Go out there and make something happen."
Make something happen they did. Many teams, including Texas, had been picking on inexperienced corner Chris Singleton. While doing an ok job, he's been beat a few times. On this drive, Chris had his revenge.
"McCoy back to pass, spots a man near the sidelines – fires a bullet…INT-ER-CEPT-ED by Singleton! Chris Singleton, the "other"
ISU corner second to Jackson made a leaping grab to give the ball back to his offense. Whoa, have these Cyclones come to play today or what?"
Down 3 with over half of the 4th quarter gone – who ya gonna give the ball to? After a short commercial, the Todd Blythe show continues. A nice run from Hicks and a nifty catch by Barkema put
ISU just outside the 20 and a fresh set of downs.
"Cyclones stroll up to the line, come out in a 3 wide set. Meyer fakes to Hicks and sprints out right. Blythe streaking across the middle – Meyer fires a bullet…caught by Blythe and the five – tacklers ahead of him. Leaps over one for the end zone – touchdown! Todd Blythe just went airborne to give Iowa State the lead with 5 minutes to play! Could it be…could they…I mean…Iowa State is ahead, you do realize this????"
Cyclone fans are in a state of shock and jubilation. Still plenty of time to play…down 21-17, surely Texas won't be held scoreless in the 2nd half, right?
With the ball, Texas began moving at a decent clip. With just under 3 minutes to play, they were barely across midfield with a fresh set of downs. The Cyclone defense was showing signs of fatigue – especially on the defensive line with Curvey and Moorehead trying to compensate for the other 2 inexperienced linemen.
After an incomplete pass, the Longhorns ripped off a 15 yard run to put them just inside the 35 and 2:34 to play. It wasn't looking good for Iowa State…
"McCoy drops back to pass…looking…looking…Moorhead in his face…bit hit! The ball is loose…scooped up by…Brent Curvey! He's got plenty of grass in front of him with a convoy of guys in white jerseys surrounding him. Across the 50…to the 40…35…brought down just inside the 30. Brent Curvey…wow. And what a hit by Moorhead – McCoy never saw him coming until it was too late!"
With under 2 minutes to play,
ISU hands the ball off to Hicks twice to pick up a first down. With Texas out of timeouts, one last handoff to Hicks and a couple kneel-downs is all this one took.
That's right,
ISU goes into Austin undefeated and leaves with one more mark in the win column – defeating #2 Texas! Cyclone fans are jumping off couches, streaking down busy highways and the beer is flowing freely. Mark Ames on the map, this was done on national television!
Pete Taylor twitches in his grave.
ISU jumps to # 16 in the polls.
Final – ISU 21 Texas 17 UNI vs. ISU
Coming off two spectacular road wins, what typically happens to a team like
ISU when facing a lesser school? Let down. Mac wouldn't have any of it, saying to a reporter before the game, "This is exactly when a team like the Cyclones gets beat. We've got to come out real, real focus today and take care of business. UNI is a real, real good team and they always play hard. It won't be an easy game."
Well, easy must be a relative term – because this game was never even close. People had been wondering when Stevie Hicks would go off – today – he answered those questions. The opening play from scrimmage was off-tackle to the right and no one touched Hicks en route to a 73 yard TD run.
UNI booted a 31 yard field goal through for their only score of the day. The defense all season has shocked fans with their high level of play, especially in the 2nd half. Last year, the 2nd half is when the Cyclone defense faltered, this year was much different.
Two defensive scores later, Carper and Jackson,
ISU was up 21-3. Blythe is never one to be forgotten, landing himself a 23 yard TD grab to close out the half.
The second half was all Stevie, all the time. Runs of 45, 31, 23, 22 and 18 highlighted the 2nd half, as well as 2 scores from the senior tailback. Shaggy added a pair of field goals and Harris even found the end zone.
The Cyclones move to # 13.
Final – ISU 48 UNI 3 Nebraska vs. ISU
The much anticipated match up – winner expected to take the North title. Nebraska's only loss came in a close game vs USC – decided in the final seconds.
Last year was a game of missed opportunities for Iowa State, dropped balls on offense and an interception in-and-out of the chest of former Cyclone Nick Leaders – handicapped the Cyclones.
"I did not play well at all last year against Nebraska. Myself and the other receivers let some catches slip away from us – this year will be different" said Todd Blythe after a Cyclone practice.
And Todd was correct. Iowa State opened the game with a bit of trickery…
"Meyer pitches the ball to Hicks on a swe- no, it's a reverse to Flynn. Coming around the left side, wait, Flynn stops and pulls the ball back to pass – he launches a deep ball in the direction of…Sumrall! He's alone on the left sideline – caught! 35…30…no one near him! 10…5…touchdown! Whadda ya know, Mac still has some tricks up his sleeve. They tried it in Lincoln last year and got a first down due to a penalty. This year, it goes the distance!"
Jack Trice is jumping and so is Austin Flynn. Said after the game, "It felt good to throw a touchdown pass again."
Flynn wasn't done scoring, next time he was on the receiving end of a Meyer pass from the 12.
Last season Zac Taylor picked apart the defense with short passes underneath the linebackers. This year, Bowen, Carper and McKinzie were ready for that non-sense – filling gaps and batting down passes. The Huskers were able to run the ball somewhat effectively, yet that lasted only so long. They put up just two field goals in the first half – the score being 14-6 going into the break.
The Huskers came out with both guns blazing in the 3rd quarter. A deep TD pass from Taylor put the Huskers within one on their first possession. A stalled drive by the Cyclones gave the ball back to Nebraksa, who quickly added a field goal – 16-14 Huskers.
The senior offensive line for
ISU dug deep and led the Cyclones on a 14 play, 78 yard drive with a heavy dose of Stevie Hicks. Capped with Kock plowing into the end zone,
ISU regained the lead.
A breakdown on kickoff coverage yielded the Huskers with great field position at the Cyclone 37. Two plays later, Zac found an open man on the sidelines and the Huskers were back on top, 23-21.
Hamilton had been quiet all afternoon, only catching one pass for 12 yards. That changed on this drive…
After a Hicks run and a 17 yard completion to Flynn,
ISU was close to mid-field.
"Play action fake to Hicks – Meyer rolls right. Fires a pass in the direction of the right sideline, Hamilton has a defender right on his hip – jump ball…Hamilton has it with one hand! Did he come down in bounds…NO! Wait, they're going to take a look at this one.
As we look at the replay, it appears Hamilton has possession…and then his right foot hits in bounds, then the left on the chalk. This should be overturned.
'The ruling on the field was an incomplete catch. After review, the receiver maintained possession while his right foot came down in bounds. First down, Iowa State'"
"An amazing catch. I've had a few great ones during my time here, but Marquis really wowed me with that one", said Blythe after the game.
Three plays later, Hicks was rumbling into the end zone to give
ISU the lead, 28-23. Each side traded punts – giving the ball to Nebraska with 3 minutes remaining. The senior QB looked confused on the final drive…firing a pass way above an open receiver and another at the feet of a running back on a swing pass. After a first down completion, Taylor was about to get to know a Cyclone defender up close and personal…
"Taylor back to pass,
ISU's rush is on – McKinzie gets through – WHOOOA! A BIG hit on Taylor – McKinzie completely unloaded on him – helmet in his chest – driving him to the ground. He looks a bit wobbly getting up. What a hit!"
Next play Taylor put one into the hands of safety James Smith. Game. Set. Match.
ISU goes to 6-0 and up to #10 in the polls. Oh, and
ISU is bowl eligible…
Final – ISU 28 Nebraska 23 ISU vs. Oklahoma
The last time
ISU took a trip to Norman, Oklahoma – they came in flying high with a #9 ranking and some very big hopes. They limped out with an embarrassing loss and wondering exactly what happened. Would this year be the same?
Having defeated Texas the previous week, Oklahoma was undefeated, ranked #2 and the favorite to win the South. Peterson has been tearing up defenses on the ground all season. While
ISU's defense has performed well, this is was their toughest test to date.
Oklahoma took the ball first and started right away by using Peterson. What they didn't expect…
"Bomar gives to Peterson – WHAM! Big hit by Kurtis Taylor…knocking Peterson flat on his back. That's certainly one way to start a game."
Peterson seemed somewhat timid the rest of the day. The Cyclone offense on the other hand, was not.
"Meyer back to pass, finds an open man, it's Flynn across the middle! Steps out of one tackle, stiff arms a corner – he's gone. 20…10…TOUCHDOWN! Austin Flynn puts the Cyclones ahead 7-0."
On the ensuing drive, Bomar exploited Singleton and picked his way down the field, resulting in a 5 yard scamper by Peterson to tie the game. An interception led to another quick Sooner score. OU added a field goal before half, giving them a 17-7 lead.
ISU went right to work to open the half, setting Hicks loose for a 15 yard gain, followed by an unexpected hand-off to Kock for 6 yards. Catches by Nickel, Blythe and Barkema put
ISU inside the 20…
"3 wide set, defense is spread. Meyer back to pass, quick hit to the tight end Barkema – plows his way from the 3…1…touchdown! A hard-fought score by Ben Barkema. A similar pass was dropped by him his freshman year – not this time!"
Within 3, the offense wanted a stop from the defense so they could regain the lead. Little did they know, the defense had other plans…
"Bomar back to pass, under pressure from Curvey – hit as he throws. Wobbly pass, short – picked off by Jackson. Not a maroon jersey near him…20…10…5…touchdown
ISU! Great job by Curvey to cause the ill-advised pass from Bomar."
With a 21-17 lead and 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter –
ISU was not about to let this one get away from them. Sensing Bomar was rattled, Skladany sent the dogs after him – creating hurried throws and 3 sacks in the 4th quarter. In three possessions, the Sooners never sniffed midfield and
ISU added a field goal.
In the same season,
ISU has defeated Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma – all on the road.
ISU moves up to #7 in the polls…their highest ranking in history. Sounds below ground are heard where Pete Taylor rests.
Final – ISU 24 OU 17 Texas Tech vs. ISU
The 7-0, yes – 7-0 Cyclones return home to a full Jack Trice like no one has ever seen it before. If you didn't know any better, you would think
ISU had one the Super Bowl. Still with 5 games to play, lots can happen.
Texas Tech rolls in also 7-0, but yet to face Oklahoma and Texas. Should they defeat
ISU, they'd be the front-runner to win the South. Strange that a South title could run through
ISU…
Fans were not disappointed by the offensive spectacle they were graced with. A total of over 1100 yards of offense was put on display – Meyer going 42/59 for 452 yards, 5 TD's and 0 INT's. A career high and a spectacular day to say the least. "I was just feeling it today, and it's a good thing I was too. It was back and forth and we needed ever single point we could get" said Meyer after the game.
And they did indeed. Blythe helped Meyer out a bit, bringing in 16 balls for 232 yards and 3 TD's. Hicks added 130 yards on the ground.
"I don't think I've seen anything like it. We had a game with Northern Illinois a few years ago here in Ames, but still – nothing like this" said Mac on the field.
Going into the final minutes of the 4th quarter – the Cyclones were down 54-48. Trailing most the game, but by no more than a TD –
ISU needed one now. Flynn, having a nice game as well with 10 catches for 124 yards, was out of the game from the previous possession with a twisted ankle.
ISU came out with a 3 wide, one tight, one back set to start the final drive.
"Ball at the 26,
ISU has a long way to go to win this game. Meyer back to pass, quick fire to Blythe across the middle – caught. BAM! Big hit on Blythe – looked to be helmet-to-helmet contact…no flag. Blythe is not getting up."
After a commercial break, Blythe was carried off the field with a reported concussion. Down 6 with just under 2 minutes to play,
ISU was without their top 2 receivers, and really their top 3 – with Davis still recovering from the off-season injury. Receivers now in the game consisted of Sumrall, Hamilton and the very rarely used Euseph Messiah. With the ball at the 38, things didn't look good.
"Meyer back to pass – finds Nickel on a seem route – down at the 49. First down! They hurry back to the line, Meyer calling the play from scrimmage. Back to pass – fires to the left – incomplete – almost intercepted.
2nd and 10 with the clock stopped at 1:37. Back to pass goes Meyer – looking…looking –finds Hamilton on the left sideline. Complete for 15 yards and out of bounds. Ball now at the 36 and 1:28 on the clock.
Meyer in the gun, ball is snapped. Looks…looks – finds Messiah for an 8 yard gain but he's tackled in bounds. They hurry to the line, snap – ball is spiked. Clock stopped at :59. Third and two from the 28. Jack Trice is very quiet, fans praying their perfect season can continue.
Out of the huddle now, Meyer goes into the gun...looking – no…it's a QB draw! He's through the line, cuts to the left – tackled after a first down at the 23. Gutsy call…but turns out to be a good one.
ISU quickly back to the line, play already called in the previous huddle it seems. Meyer back to pass – looking – fires – just over the hands of Hamilton in the end zone. He had Marquis open, just couldn't hit him, that was close.
2nd and 10 with the clock stopped at :31. Meyer back in the gun, quick fire to Sumrall on the right sideline – in and out of his hands – incomplete. Would not have been a big gain there anyways. Clock at :23 with 3rd down from the 23. Meyer under center this time, rolls left…looking…looking – can't find a man. Rolling left – takes off for the sideline. Out of bounds at the 20. Good coverage by the Tech defense that time. 3 yard gain but now 4th down with just :11 to play. This is the game right here….
Meyer in the gun, Hamilton split wide left, Sumrall to the right with Messiah in the slot. Hicks in the backfield next to Meyer. Ball is snapped…Meyer looking for Hamilton, nothing there. Looks back right…moves right…cocks and fires…….it's……..caught! Touchdown Iowa State. Looks like…Messiah!
Looking at the replay, it appears Messiah headed for the goal line, faked a flag route and headed for the post. Defender bit just enough to give him the space Meyer needed to fit the ball in. Wow, what pass and catch to tie the game.
Extra point…up…and…..GOOD!
How fitting is that, the Cyclones are resurrected by Messiah!"
"I just went in there and did what I'm supposed to, the same thing I do in practice. It was a routine catch, one I hope to make again and again" blurted Euseph through a big smile. "I just hope Austin and Todd will be back soon."
"With the performance so far this year, we may need to bowl that "gamble" of an end zone in much sooner than we thought" joked Pollard.
Boasting an 8-0 record,
ISU finds themselves undefeated going into their last four games, the easier of the four Big 12 contests. Now ranked #5, the Cyclones smell more than just a Big 12 North title.
However a big question remained in Ames. How bad were the injuries to Flynn and Blythe?
Final – ISU 55 Texas Tech 54 ISU vs. K-State
The last time
ISU visited Manhattan, they needed some late-game heroics to pull off the win. Notsomuch this time.
ISU would go at this game without Flynn, who is expected to return next week vs. Kansas. Blythe would play, just not sure how much.
So, it was clear
ISU wanted to lean on Stevie Hicks early and often – he provided no disappointment. Gaining 267 yards on the ground and picking up another 45 on 7 catches, Stevie had a career day. The K-State defense was no match for the high-powered Cyclone offense. The Wildcat offense faired no better, only gaining 278 yards of total offense and yielding just 13 points.
Hamilton, Sumrall and Messiah had respectable days as well. Blythe only played in about 1/3 of the offensive snaps, still was able to yield an early touchdown grab.
Final – ISU 34 K-State 13 Kansas vs. ISU
Back to full strength on offense and 9-0,
ISU looked like a sure bet to defeat Kansas and clinch the elusive Big 12 North title. Although, Cyclone fans have seen this movie before, Part I vs. Missouri in 2004 and Part II at Kansas in 2005. Fans are desperately hoping this does not become an ugly trilogy.
If the opening kick-off has any indication on how this day would go…
"Sumrall takes the kick at the 5 – heads up field. Breaks to the left…spins out of a tackle – he's got some daylight. Kicker leaps at his feet, Sumrall hurdles the kicker! He's across midfield – at the 40…30…20…this one is going…5…touchdown! RJ Sumrall couldn't get
ISU on the board any faster!"
In the second quarter, with
ISU up 17-3, Curvey made his annual end zone appearance…
"Meier back to pass, quick rush from Taylor, swats the ball away from Meier. Curvey scoops it up at the 30…he's headed for the end zone. He's bumbling over the 20…15…10…5…touchdown! Brent Curvey, the
ISU scoring machine, does it again!
ISU takes a 27-3 lead into the half after a 34 yard field goal by Shaggy.
In the second half, Kansas makes an early run with a quick touchdown and field goal, yet
ISU's defense puts the clamps on, not allowing anything else. Blythe added a nifty one-handed TD grab on a 8 yard fade route and Hicks put one into the end zone.
ISU finally clinches their Big 12 North title, the monkey is off their back. Now ranked #3 in the nation, behind only undefeated West Virginia and LSU…could
ISU be a national title contender? Cardinal and gold flowers sprout from above Pete Taylor's grave.
Final – ISU 41 Kansas 13 ISU vs. Colorado
In his first season with the Buffs, Hawkins has done a fine job, only losing so far to Georgia, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. With tough games remaining against
ISU and Nebraska, Buff fans are hoping to win one of the two.
They'll have to wait one more week.
Meyer not only showcased his throwing ability in Boulder, but his ability to gain yards, and create points, with his feet. While not in the same class as Vince Young, Meyer's TD runs of 47 and 32 sent Colorado defenders spinning – creating a few nifty highlights for ESPN. That was just in the first quarter.
Jackson added an interception to his resume, making it easy for Hicks to score from the 13 yard line. While the Buffs managed to get a TD and field goal in before half, they were still down 21-10.
In the 2nd half, Meyer threw Blythe a bone, to keep him happy, which he took 38 yards to the bank. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to cash it in do to NCAA rules – he settled for the 6 points instead.
The scoring dried up until Colorado booted a 51 yard field goal through the uprights. A 3-and-out by
ISU gave the Buffs the ball back, yet they did little with it, except give it back to
ISU with good field position…
"Colorado back to punt, snap is somewhat high, gets it down, there's a rush – blocked!
ISU recovers at the 24!"
With the game already in control and the clock down to 2 minutes,
ISU was content to hand it to Hicks 3 times and kick a field goal.
Now 11-0,
ISU is a mere .2 points behind West Virginia for the 2nd place spot in the BCS. Cyclone fans begin pinching themselves all across Iowa.
Final – ISU 31 Colorado 13 Missouri vs. ISU
Typically
ISU is forced to run some sort of promo to get butts in the seats for the last game or two. "Pack the Jack" with $10 tickets, half-priced tickets with your stub from the previous week, etc. On this winter day, snow on the ground with temps close to the negative numbers and winds blowing at 25-35mph – fans showed up in droves. Didn't look like there was an empty seat in the house.
Unfortunately, one of the biggest highlights from this game was the rabbit that appeared on the field during a break – that danced from the 45 to the 37, cut back toward the left sideline and headed for the goal line. The fans cheered, following the rabbit, "15…10…5…touchdown rabbit!".
Perhaps it was the cold, or the wind, that by the end of the first quarter was producing 40-50mph gusts – that caused the game to be a snoozer. Maybe
ISU came out flat – who knows. But at the half, it was a 3-3 tie and fans were getting a bit anxious. Shaggy had attempted 3 field goals, only connecting on one. Missouri had not faired any better missing one field goal and fumbling the ball away inside the 5.
The second half produced a little more scoring, yet it was Missouri that started things off. After an ill-advised pass by Meyer turned the ball over, Missouri took 3 plays to move 27 yards for a score. Trailing 7 with the 4th quarter yet to play,
ISU needed to get to work.
Until now, the only thing working for
ISU was the ground game, Hicks picking up a few very tough yards here and there. Finally, with 3rd and 7 from the Tiger 31,
ISU made something happen.
"The Cyclones come out in a 4 wide set, trips right and Flynn alone to the left. Meyer in the gun, ball snapped. Quick pump toward Flynn, Meyer looks back right – he's got Blythe streaking down the middle! Fires and…..it's caught! Blythe dives over a safety and lands in the end zone! Touchdown Cyclones!"
Finally, with the game tied, fans warmed up and made some noise to assist the Cyclone defense. After a Tiger punt,
ISU drove to mid-field, highlighted by a 31 yard reverse to Sumrall. Unfortunately, the very next play resulted in disaster – Hicks mishandled a pitch to the right, the Tiger defense recovered and returned it to the Cyclone 20. With just 4:20 to play, once again fans grew weary.
After a gain of 5 on the ground and an incomplete pass, barely off the fingertips of a Tiger receiver that would have resulted in a touchdown – Big Play Curvey awoke the sleeping Trice faithful…
"Daniel drops back to pass – rush up the middle from Curvey! Daniel sidesteps a tackle – steps up into the pocket. Cocks back and…he's stripped…recovered by Taylor! Curvey, having missed Daniel the first time, was able to come back around and knock the ball away from Daniel just before he started the throwing motion forward. What a play by Curvey!"
With the ball now at their own 24 and the clock at 3:45,
ISU had it's sights set on breaking the 10-10 tie. Following a 4 yard gain by Hicks – Meyer threaded the ball through the swirling winds and Hamilton came down with it at the Cyclone 46. Clock stopped at 3:21 – first down!
An incomplete pass intended for Barkema and a failed running play to the left put
ISU in a 3rd and long.
"Meyer in the gun, ball snapped. Looks left…pressure…moves right…looking…fires the ball toward the middle of the field…caught! What an acrobatic catch by RJ Sumrall! The ball was over his head and he seemed to leap into the skies for that one!"
First down Cyclones from the Tiger 44 with 2:32 on the clock.
ISU went with a two tight set, giving Hicks extra blockers. After two hand-offs, Hicks had picked up a total of 11 yards and put the ball at 33 with 1:34 to play.
ISU tried Kock up the middle to catch the Tiger defense off guard. It appeared to work, until a Tiger linebacker made a shoe-string tackle, bringing Kock down at the 30. After an incomplete pass,
ISU had 3rd and 7 with :52 to play.
"3 wide now, Meyer in the gun. Ball snapped, rush from Missouri. Nickel moving with Meyer to the right…Meyer gets him the ball! Turns up field, tackled at the….32 yard line! Looks like they're just over a yard short for the first down. Time out Iowa State."
Looking at 3rd and 1 from the 32,
ISU had a tough call to make. Kick a long field goal into the south end zone, with the swirling winds in Shaggy's face, or go for it. Mac was quoted after the game saying "We had to kick the field goal there. Plus, Shaggy had kicked so well all season, what would I be saying about my confidence in him if we went for it?"
Cyclones are thinking, here we are again. Tie game with Missouri to end the season, a field goal away from a win. At least, the Big 12 North title was already taken care of. However, in this unexpected and miracle season, Cyclone fans were thinking far, far beyond that Big 12 North championship. They were a kick and a game away from a possible National Championship appearance!
"In comes the field goal unit having a tough day with the wind – just 1 for 3. Shaggy has attempted some big kicks, but this is likely the biggest one in his career. Ball on the right hash – winds blowing N/NW. Not an easy try, to say the least. Ball is snapped, hold is good. Kick is up…and….it has the distance…going to be close! The kick is…..GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! Iowa State has done it! 12-0 for the first time EVER. Kansas City, here we come!"
A rematch date with the Sooners is now on the horizon. Cyclone fans begin planning trips to visit Arrowhead Stadium, what could soon become Jack Trice South.
Final – ISU 13 Missouri 10 Oklahoma vs. ISU – Big 12 Championship
Undefeated and #3
ISU. #7 and one loss Oklahoma. Should
ISU win, they'll gain the necessary ground on West Virginia to take over the #2 spot in the BCS – and a date with LSU in the title game! Should OU turn the tables on
ISU, they'll be headed to another BCS appearance. The nation watches this all important Big 12 championship game.
The Sooners have experienced some success in Arrowhead, having played in all 3 of the title games in Kansas City. Their only loss was an embarrassing upset to K-State – the other two were a domination of Colorado and a close win over K-State.
ISU's last appearance in Arrowhead was vs. Florida State – a game Cyclone fans may never forget. After today, they just might.
The game started out innocently enough, each team seeming content to test one another – like a co-ed pillow fight. Some good hits now and then, but mostly a bunch of dancing around an giggling.
After the first quarter,
ISU held a 9-7 advantage – field goals of 24, 27 and 36. The Sooner's lone score coming off a 48 yard scamper from Peterson. In the second quarter, following an OU field goal to take the lead at 10-9, the Cyclone offense finally came to life.
"Cyclones come to the line, down 1 with 3:23 to play in the half – ball spotted at their own 43. 2nd and 7. 3 wide with Flynn to the right, Hamilton to the left and Blythe in the slot. Meyer in the gun, ball snapped – quick fake to Hicks. He looks for Flynn on the sidelines, covered well – suddenly lets it go deep, VERY deep. He's got Blythe with a step on the defender. Ball a little short – both leap for it. And…it's BLYTHE! He comes down with it at the 8…stumbling backwards, spins…and dives over the goal line. What an acrobatic play by Todd Blythe, not only to come down with the ball – but to keep his balance and score!"
That was all it took. With a lead of 16-10, the Cyclones never looked back. Bomar was confused by the defense all day, Singleton and Smith each picking off passes. While Peterson was successful, it wasn't enough to sustain drives, the d-line for the 'Clones making stops at the right times.
The Cyclones roar to a 33-10 lead to close the 4th quarter, a 38 yard field goal to open the 2nd half, a 3 yard score from Ryan Kock and a 23 yard diving catch in the end zone by Flynn. The Sooners put up a fight early in the 4th quarter by adding a field goal and touchdown, but
ISU matched that with a score of their own – Barkema finding a crease in the middle of the field and slicing the Sooner defense for 35 yards and a score.
Final – ISU 40 Oklahoma 20 LSU vs. ISU – National Championship
At last, the Cyclones were playing in a January bowl game – THE January Bowl game. In a shocking upset, Rutgers took down West Virginia – removing any controversy from this year's title game. LSU and
ISU were the only undefeated teams left standing and only one would walk away today with that distinction.
A BCS official in Glendale a few days prior to the game was quoted saying "I've never seen anything like this. I don't what the population of Iowa is, but I can't imagine many people are left in the state. Cyclone fans just keep rolling into town. Amazing, to say the least."
Having been "snubbed" by voters for the Heisman, the award going to Adrian Peterson, Meyer and Blythe commented to reporters…
"Sure, the trophy would have been nice, but we're playing in the National Championship game! I'll take that over some individual trophy any day of the week!" boasted Blythe.
"Yeah, what he said" laughed Meyer. "We're a team, Todd and I did not get the recognition we've received so far by going at it alone. There are always 11 guys on the field, we're just 2 of them. Plus, I won't hold it against Todd that he ruined my chances for the trophy!"
It was widely reported and expected that with 2 Cyclones in the running for the trophy, the Cyclone faithful would be split, causing less votes individually for Meyer and Blythe.
"I'm happy for Adrian, he had a great season. I do recall though, we beat him and his team twice…" Blythe said through a smile.
"Would you two shut up and get back to work? We've got a game to win in a few days!" hollered Curvey as he trotted onto the field for practice.
Finally, all the hoop-la was over. Kick-off was mere moments away. Mac had this to say before leading his team onto the field…"We've got a real tough test today. LSU has some very good kids and a great coach to lead them. It's a great day for Cyclone fans, but it's not over. We've got one more game to win."
LSU's offense was just as high-powered as
ISU's – Russell, Broussard and Bowe all having very nice seasons for the Tigers. Being forced to sit out last year's bowl game and beating of Miami, Russell was hungry to play. This would no doubt be a game for the history books.
LSU took the ball first and wasted no time in cashing in. After some nice runs by Broussard and a 23 yard scramble from Russell, LSU was deep in Cyclone territory. Another 8 yard pick-up from Broussard and then Bowe torched Singleton for a TD catch. With 12:00 still remaining in the first quarter, LSU was already up 7-0.
Not to be shown up, the Cyclone offense took less than 2 minutes to answer. First play from scrimmage resulted in a 34 yard pick up after a completion to Sumrall. Runs of 7 and 5 yards by Hicks gave
ISU a first down at the Tiger 38. Enter Todd Blythe…
"The Cyclones come to the line in a 3 wide set. Meyer under center – drops back to pass. Passes up an open Nickel in the middle and launches it deep. Blythe has a step…now 2 on the defender. Ball a little long…Blythe makes a one-handed grab! He's at the 10…5…touchdown! What a pass and catch by the dynamic duo of Meyer and Blythe…those two have an amazing connection. You're watching 2 future Sunday stars, ladies and gentlemen!"
Knotted up at 7 still with 10 minutes to play in the first quarter – the lines had been drawn. The bar raised and the stakes were high.
For the remainder of the 1st quarter, the defenses took over. Creating quick stops and big hits. Early in the 2nd quarter, Jackson made a diving interception of a Russell pass, giving the ball to
ISU at the Tiger 23, only to have the
ISU offense fumble it away 2 plays later.
With the ball back at their 19, the LSU offense embarked on a 14 play, 6:32 minute scoring drive capped by an 8 yard touchdown run by Russell.
ISU's offense seemed to be in a trance, going 3-and-out and punting away to LSU – ball at their 37 with 2:34 left in the half. A pair of quick passing plays and LSU was already at the Cyclone 35. Luckily, Curvey busted through the line and made a huge sack, shifting some of the momentum back to
ISU. The Tigers were only able to advance to the
ISU 29 and as time expired, converted a field goal to close the half. LSU 17
ISU 7 at the break.
It's not yet known what Dan McCarney said to his team in the locker room and it may never be. Yet the Cyclones returned to the field in the 2nd half with a flurry of energy and emotion.
Each team started the half with a 3-and-out. An amazing punt return by an
ISU senior got the Cyclones rolling. Receiving the ball at the 18, the often-forgotten Ryan Baum took the ball up the left sideline for 72 yards. Four plays later, Kock plowed into the end zone, the Cyclones had erected themselves. Down 3, the defense set their sights on their own score…
"Russell back in the gun on 3rd and 8. Ball snapped, fires a quick pass to the sidelines…it's intercepted by Jackson! No one near him, he easily waltzes into the end zone for the defensive score! 21-17, Iowa State!"
Pandemonium ensues in the stands of Cardinals Stadium and on the couches and in bars across the great state of Iowa. The Iowa State Cyclones are leading by 4 points in the National Championship game, with just over a quarter left to play. A minor tremor is picked up by scientists, the center seemingly at the location where Pete Taylor rests.
With the ball back, the LSU offense quickly makes its way to mid-field, only to stall after three straight incompletions – giving the ball back to the Cyclones. After picking up some nice yardage, Meyer seems to complete a 28 yard pass to Blythe at the Tiger 15. Fans are jumping out of their seats, until it's announced the play is being reviewed.
Much to the chagrin of Cyclone faithful, the call is overturned, creating a 3rd and 9 from the Tiger 43. The LSU secondary did a nice job on this play of double-covering Blythe and creating a pass rush – Meyer was sacked and
ISU had to punt – with 5:23 left. It would be up to the defense to preserve the 4 point advantage. LSU's offense had other plans.
With the ball of the Cyclone 13, LSU began the drive with a 36 yard Russell-to-Bowe connection, silencing the screaming 'Clone fans. Broussard rattled off consecutive runs of 8, 4 and 7 yards to give LSU a 2nd and 3 at the
ISU 32 – with 3:36 to play. An incomplete pass and a draw by Russell gave LSU a fresh set of downs at
ISU's 27. The next play was a high-and-low for the Cyclone fans…
"LSU in the one back set, Russell hands it to Broussard, he goes up the middle of the line – plowed back by Curvey…the ball comes loose! There's a scramble for it, looks like Taylor for
ISU could have come up with it. Lets see what the officials rule this. The pile clears and…it's Russell? Somehow Russell was heady enough to see the fumble and get on it before the Cyclones could get the ball back. What a narrowly missed opportunity for Iowa State."
With 2nd and 13 and 2:32 left on the clock, LSU wasted no more time – dialing up a Russell-to-Bowe touchdown pass. 24-21 LSU. It would now be on the shoulders of Bret Meyer and the Cyclone offense to embark on yet another game-winning drive.
After escaping a near disaster on the kickoff return, Flynn fumbling the ball only to have Barkema recover –
ISU began the drive at their own 32.
Meyer overthrew an open Sumrall along the left sideline to start the drive, but then came back with a Vince Young style run to pick up 17 yards after the pocket collapsed. With 1:58 to play,
ISU had 1st and 10 at the 49.
Hicks was not about to be left out, going up the left sidelines for a pickup of 18 and then another of 8 – setting
ISU up with a 2nd and 2 at the 25 – with 1:08 left on the clock. Kock easily picked up the first down on a quick-hit up the middle – now :59 on the clock – the ball resting at the Tiger 21 and
ISU with 1st and 10.
Meyer found Nickel in the middle, yet only for a 4 yard pickup. Clock at :41 and ticking,
ISU needed to keep moving. On the next play, the Cyclones avoided a disaster when an LSU defender came through the line and smashed Meyer to the ground – ball coming loose. Luckily Hicks was in the vicinity and fell on the ball.
With 3rd and 12 and the clock at :22, the Cyclones called timeout – their final of the game. Coming out of the break,
ISU trotted to the line in a 3 wide set – ball on the 23 – need the 11 for a first down. Better yet, just score…
"Meyer drops back, looking…looking – pressure from the left! He runs right, still looking. Takes off up field…crosses the 20…15…brought down at the…12 yard line! No first down, the clock still running 4th and just a yard to go. With not enough time to get the field goal unit on the field,
ISU is forced to scramble to the line for one last play!"
We'll never know how or what caused it, but the voice of Dan Fouts somehow sounded very much like that of the late Pete Taylor on this final call…
"Meyer barks out the call as
ISU sets on the line. Clock at :04…:03…:02…ball snapped! This is it, the final play of the 2007 National Championship game! Meyer drops back…moves to the right…stops…pumps toward Flynn on the left…pressure…runs right…looks…there he is! Meyer fires one toward the right corner of the end zone. Up he goes…and…he's got it. HE CAUGHT THE BALL! Todd Blythe, the towering receiver, reeled in the rocket from Meyer…ohhhhhh myyyyy! The Iowa State Cyclones are this year's National Champions!"
The City of Ames is in jubilation.
"I'm real, real proud of our kids today. They fought hard all season and today was no exception. Give credit to LSU, they made it tough for us to come out with a real, real hard victory today. With one of the toughest schedules in the nation, we came out on top. Defeating 3 top 10 teams and a number of others that were nationally ranked. I'm real, real happy to be the coach of the Cyclones!"
In a game of all games, the Cyclones finally toss the monkey off their backs, shot it in the head and drove over it with the bus on their way out of Glendale, AZ. A season never to be forgotten, the Cyclones did the impossible. The one crazy soul that put $10,000 on
ISU to win it all, at 300/1 odds, is now a very, very rich man.
Final – ISU 28 LSU 24
