Post MBB Recruiting Update - 7/29/06

MBB Recruiting Update - 7/29/06

Jeremy

As an update regarding the status of Iowa State Men's Basketball recruiting for the coming seasons, I wanted to touch on each of the frequently talked about recruiting possibilities. This is simply an update on the level of interest shown by potential recruits based on conversations I have had in the past 48 hours.

With Iowa State's coaching staff out west analyzing players in AAU Tournaments and many players starting to narrow their lists, I expect this list to change and consolidate over the next few weeks. There will be some changes in interest levels and some additions of new prospects over the next week or two especially.
|Highly interested in ISU:|
||
PG|Malcolm Delaney|2007 Class
PG|Diante Garrett|2007 Class
PG|Melvin Goins|2007 Class
PG|Jeffrey Jordan|2007 Class
SF|Andre McFarland|2007 Class
SF|Jamine Peterson|2007 Class
SG|Marcus Relphorde|2007 Class
SG|P'Allen Stinnett|2007 Class
SF|Dale Vanwright|2006 or 2007 Class
||
PG|Dominique Buckley|2008 Class
PG|Darius Gabriel|2008 Class
PG|Jeremiah Kelly|2008 Class
SG|Tristan Thompson|2008 Class
PG|Travon Woodall|2008 Class
||
|Moderately interested in ISU:|
||
SG|Dwight Buycks|2007 Class
SG|Blake Hoffarber|2007 Class
PG|Jacob Pullen|2007 Class
||
PG|Lewis Jackson|2008 Class
PF|L.A. Pomlee|2008 Class
SF|Emmanuel Negadu|2008 Class
C|Jeremy Robinson|2008 Class
||
|Not very interested in ISU:|
||
PG|Aaron Johnson|2007 Class
SG|Eshaunte Jones|2007 Class
PF|Jon Leuer|2007 Class
||
|Undetermined level of interest:|
||
SF|George Goode|2007 Class
PG|Terrell McKenzie|2007 Class
A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Im not really surprised to see Leuer's interest in us droppping. Hes blowing up and getting attention from all over the place. As long as he doesnt go to EIU or KU, i dont care where he goes.
I would love to see us get Jordan as our only PG this year, at least if we could get Darius Gabriel in 08'. Jordan would bring so much more than his play on the court, it would be very interesting to have him in a Clone uniform. BUt M. Delaney would be my PG of choice right now.
But with the way Wesley Johnson is looking, were gonna need more big men than will need SF. I like what ive seen from the Capital city classic. But I think Stinnett and McFarland make the most sense to finish out the class. We might as well get speed and athleticism if we can get size.

Out of all the points were going after i would rather have Garrett... from the sounds of it he has the ability to blow up next year, and he is sort of unknown due to a car accident last year. After next year i think we would be very happy for him to be a clone. Weren't we the first big program to offer Leuer? I think i read somewhere that Indiana was the first to offer so he was going to stay loyal to that and visit them. Even if we don't get him its got to make you feel good that McD beat everyone to looking at the guy.

I would really like Stinnett, Garrett, and McFarland. I think McFarland could create some good mismatches for us. He is strong yet is smaller so he's probably quicker than some of the bigger small forwards. I would love to have Hoffarber because he is supposedly a great shooter. There is nothing like having that guy you can kick it out to while in the post to drain the three.

How are you classifying these??? It would seem

that if that many players were 'highly interested' in ISU that at least one of them would have committed.

WHY are they high on ISU? Because we have offered and they have been on campus? Or is there more than that?

That's fine, but again, do you SEE how many

are supposedly 'highly interested' in ISU?

If all of them are TRULY 'highly interested', you would think that at least ONE of them would have committed.

I just think that maybe the 'highly interested' group should be 'moderate to highly interested'.

To me, if a player is highly interested and sees we only have a couple of schollies open, someone would have committed by now.

We do have a committment in Craig Brackins, which takes him off of the list. If we one of those players committed they wouldnt be on the list in the first place. I think them being highly interested in us means that they ISU is in the top 2 or 3 schools for there list. Thats how i see it anyway!

I Guess I'd Define Highly Interested Different

A kid's status wouldn't be "highly interested" if he committed to ISU. A kid who is "highly interested" is someone who is interested enough to have taken or plans on taking a visit to ISU and puts ISU in the top 3-4 schools he is evaluating.

Having 9 kids "highly interested" is about right if we want 3 committments. You need to remember that July is a busy, busy month for these kids from an AAU standpoint. They have an event just about every weekend and don't have much time to evaluate the schools they are interested. I would think we will see some visits and committments in the next couple weeks as kids want to make their decisions before school starts.

Sorry for any confusion on the ranking of the players. My basis for saying "Highly interested in ISU" simply goes along with the following guidelines having been confirmed:

ISU is in the top 5 for a player.
ISU is holding steady or gaining favorability with the player.
ISU is considered to have medium to strong interest in the player.
ISU would accept the player if given the chance.

The reason there are a lot of players showing strong interest is because they see an opportunity to participate with quality minutes almost right away. I have heard some remarkable things about what players think of the new coaching staff and their "ideas" for the future. It does not surprise me at all that so many have ISU so high on their list. Obviously not all of those would pick ISU in the end but that list is accurate with what I have heard from people within ISU and on the recruiting trail.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

That is very accurate. We would not be in a good position if we only had two or three highly interested players if we wanted to get three quality players signed. You have to aim high in order to get adequate players.

Think of it as playing the lottery, if you don't buy tickets you can't win. It's great to think about what you want to spend the winnings on but if you don't play and buy tickets, you have no chance of winning at all. The more tickets you buy, the better the chance of getting some winning numbers.

Jeremy,
Can you give us a list on which of these players have been offered?
