Age of Empire III

So I picked this up tonight. I always enjoyed Sim City 2000, but my new laptop has out grown the capatibility.

Anyone played? Any suggestions? I suck at this now too.

Re: Age of Empire III

sim city 2000 sucked. if u want great version of that game pick up sim city 3000 or sim city 4. AOE 3 is also a great game, but its pretty hard. the best way to take out other armies is not to even worry about building up troops for awhile, but keep making plenty of worker (best way is to break your workers into groups of 4 or 5, while have each group chop wood, hunt, mine for gold, ect.) always focus on moving to the next age. after you get to the 4 or 5th age, then start building ur up your armies.

There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams

AoE 1 & 2 has taken many hours (really weeks) away from my life. Planning on buying AoE 3 soon!

CIV 3 and 4 .....

CIV 1 brought down my first college 'career'.

I bought CIV 3 Christmas '01. I played it once or twice. I remember playing it for something like 12-14 straight hours. I realized if I played this game I would probably get myself booted from college (I almost did that all on my own anyway), so I banned myself from playing it - until about a month ago when I played it again. I'm hooked again. I just picked up CIV IV w/ all expansion packs this last weekend. I think it's great (although I think there are certain things they should have left alone - like the religious aspect I find kind of dumb...)

Did you notice neither one of us brought up CIV2?

Well, I hadn't even heard of CIV before CIV 3. So in my little world the game doesn't exist

I personally am a HUGE fan of Ages II with the conqueror's expansion. I haven't played Ages III, but people I've talked to actually like the 2nd one better. Playing with people online is pretty darn fun.

Re: Age of Empire III

I had to slow the game down to be able to even do anything. Right now my issue is fighting properly. I don't really have any tactics, just full bore.

I looked at Civ and a Settlers one as well. I just liked the updated graphics of AOE, and wasn't sure if the other two would work well with Vista which is what I have unfortunately.

I held off buing the expansion one right now although it was combined for only $10 more or seperately for $20. I wasn't sure if I would get that much into it that I wanted to spend that much right now.

Has anyone played both Civ and AOE? What are the differences, pros & cons?

Re: Age of Empire III

I do, I do.

Civ:
Cons: Great game, in depth and addicting, great turn based game (no wonder it won so many awards)
Pros: graphics are okay and addicting.

AOE:
pros: 2 is/was the best with expansions. 3 is decent. fast play. In depth and graphics are pretty good. Better in multiplayer than Civ (IMO)
cons: real time and usually fast. easy to get lost in things

I play both ..... and switch it up when I want a different tempo'ed game.

Re: Age of Empire III

Your not joking on speed. I guess I would've expected to stay in the different ages a little longer. It seems that the goal is actually to advance through as fast as possible.

I did put the speed down to slow, and it helped me a bit. Otherwise, I was getting blown away because I barely had a Platoon of Muskateers when they are weilding 6-7 calvary.

Not sure if I'm fond of the campaign side. I prefer to be able to build I guess then just be thrown into it.

Re: Age of Empire III

yes Technology is the key in AOE. And that means getting through the ages ASAP and building the new buildings as fast as possible.

I prefer to 'steal' gold wherever and whenever I can. i will sacrifce 8-10 villagers to get some good time at mining 'remote' or enemy gold sites. Basically mining as far from home as I can early in the game. I have had many matches come down to gold and who runs out first.... that makes warfare interesting.

if you play with allies... you will never run out of gold if you can keep a good trail of merchants trading to other markets.

Re: Age of Empire III

Multiplayer in AOE and Civ are completely different animals than against the computer, requires different tactics as basically a human doesnt do some of the stupid stuff.

Yea, um haven't even got into that yet. Wow I got plenty to learn.

Sure, I think I could do that. I noticed it works over dial-up, but not sure how well.

I need to do better on military tactics. Formations and such. I just select a group and charge ahead. I think you can setup units right?
