They aren't discontinuing the 80gb PS3. They are just changing the bundle...they will ship it with Metal Gear and a DualShock 3 controller (as opposed to Motorstorm and a Dualshock 2 controller).

Re: PS3 vs. Xbox 360

And the 80GB PS3 uses software emulation for backwards compatibility (someone already mentioned this), which I understand works decently but not great. You might be better off buying a 40GB PS3 for a $100 less, and then that $100 will buy you a new PS2. Or you can get a 360 and a PS2...

I bought a 360 at first because I was interested in online gaming, and the price was a bit cheaper. But I decided I didn't want to risk RROD or some other failure, and my 360 sounded like a jet engine (I don't think it had the latest BenQ drive), and I found a great deal on a new PS3. So I sold the 360 and picked up a 40GB PS3 and haven't looked back. I think the PS3 has a few extra things going for it, which certainly aren't necessary, but can be nice (built in wifi, upgradable HDD, reliability, probably a longer product lifecycle, bluray although I don't care about that, free online play which is good for me cuz I only play COD4, you can install linux if you're into that sort of thing).

Honestly, most of the reasons I listed aren't important enough to base a decision on. If you don't care about exclusive titles, you probably wouldn't notice much/any difference between the consoles. I'm glad I could provide some useless info that probably won't help you at all :)

Well, I've decided to sell my xbox 360 and games. We got a ps3 to play blu ray movies and now it's really hard to justify having the xbox to play games while not playing games on the ps3.

Weren't you the one trying to talk me into buying a 360?

We got a PS3 this week for the same reason you did, for the blu-ray player. Got my first Blu Ray movies today, so I cannot wait for these kids to go to sleep so I can try it out.

Make sure to pick up Blade Runner on Blu-Ray. I just bought it a couple weeks back and it looks NICE.

What games do you have? Im also looking for another controller.

Harriet Michaels: Do you actually like haggis?
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I think it's repellent in every way. In fact, I think most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

I will probably pick up a PS3 to play blu ray movies as well. Why not? It's just as cheap as a stand alone blu ray player. Beyond that, my online play will probably always be on xboxlive.

Now the online play is a little "friendlier" if you have a ton of fellow nerds that you know and like to play woth all the time. I think its easier to chat and get into games with them on the 360. But I am and always will be a Playstation guy. It is a pain to play COD4 and try to get into games with a couple guys I work with and get denied. Some of that i think is the games server though.

The Blu ray is a priceless add on. I love being able to see veryones pores in their noses on film.
