So since my PS2 crapped out last night, I'm thinking it's better to buy either the PS3 or Xbox 360, but I'm a little torn on what to get.
PS3 has the Blue Ray, but the 360 is cheaper and has a larger hard drive.
Can you play ps2 games on the ps3? If so, that would really help in my decision.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
(I did a search for a thread like this and couldn't find one, sorry if we already discussed this)

Most of the PS3 models will play PS2 games just fine. Some PS1 games too. And it has the wining HD format - very nice plus.
I'll still argue that LIVE is better than anything out there... yeah yeah I know it will cost a big time $49 a year, but that's less than the price of a game. I'll also argue that 360 has a much better game library of exclusive titles.
While the PS3 is growing on me it still needs some better exclusives to push me over.... GT5 may just do that. But if I had to pick one I'd take the 360 for the games.

Thanks for the input. I'm really just a fan of Madden, College Football, College Hoops and MLB The Show, so all of those would play on the ps3, so I'd be alright.
Looks like I'm getting the ps3 as along as the ps2 games continue to play.

You may want to wait until the new ps3 comes out. They've discontinued the 80gb and are coming out with a 120gb in the near future.
It's going to have the dual shock controllers and be backwards compatible.

I say we play a game against our second team players. We would have a closer game! I can't wait to see us shove it down ISU's throats! They are going to need some syrup for all the pancakes we will be getting.---lukestylez (Hawkeye Fan)

i went with the ps3 because i had so many ps2 games. i have like 30 games, and the only one that wont play on my ps3 is NCAA football 07. plus all of my friends had the xbox and i didnt like it because of the huge controllers. but now the xbox 360 has smaller controllers. and as isukyro said, you cant beat xbox live. it really puts playstations online gaming to shame, but on the other hand ps3 online is free.

It's going to have the dual shock controllers and be backwards compatible. I beleive I read somewhere that the new versions of the PS3 (120GB and 160GB) will not be backwards compatible with PS2 or PS1 games. You might want to do some research on this to see if you should pick one up now or later.

So I just read on Gamestops website that the 40 GB PS3 (which is really the only one Best Buy sells) is not backwards compatible with the ps2.
I really don't want to spend all the money if I can't use my ps2 games for a while.
Anyone recently buy one that can confirm that it IS backwards compatible?

I'm fairly sure the cheapest PS3 is not backwards compatible, but I'm not positive.

Just got home from GameStop and Best Buy. Only the 80 and 120 GB's are backwards compatible, but they are discontinuing those, which means that no one sells them anymore. Looks like it's time to buy the ps3 and trade in everything for the ps2.

Someone that knows more should chime in on this backwards compatability issue. It's my understanding that the newer PS3s do it by way of software (much like the 36), as the older PS3s did it by way of a chip in the hardware. If you go to the Playstation website it has a list of which games work on which firmware update and any known bugs. It looks to me like have a good list on just about all the PS3 sku's.

See if you can find a 60gb model somewhere. That is the best model. Don't forget that the hard drive is easily upgraded.

I did a little looking into this not too long ago, but didn't end up getting a PS3. The 20 and 60 gig models include the same engine as the PS2, and hence are best for backwards compatibility. The 80 gig uses software emulation, which is not as good but works for most games. The 40 gig is not backwards compatible.
