I played it last night and it was just kind of "meh." No real strategery like you could do with previous versions and different weapons for different characters.
Wish they wouldn't have gotten rid of the dual character thing, thought that was the best part of Double Dash.

I am really liking it so far. For me it's more about the driving than the items/weapons and strategy, so it is just what I was hoping for. Very easy control scheme to pick up, especially if you've played any other driving games on Wii. Both my rechargable remotes died after a couple hours of playing, but so far I'm really liking the course designs too. I also like the "ghost race" feature in time trials. You can race a ghost version of yourself that is an exact replica of your best time on that course. Pretty fun stuff.
Edit:
I was just thinking, the ghost race feature may not be new. The Wii is the first Nintendo system I've owned since Super Nintendo, and so this is the first Mario Kart I've owned since then too. I have played the N64 and Gamecube versions with friends, but only multi-player, never time trials. Maybe it's not new, but I like it!

Played the game for about 2 hours tonight... Got the game and one additional wheel for now.
I am defintely enjoying it!
My Mario Kart Code is:0645-6172-8469
I'm still not quite understanding why I have to have a friend code AND codes for each game... oh well.

What is everyone's preferred controller style? Mine is definitely the wheel, or I can use the remote without the wheel just as easily from all those hours of Excitetruck. I tried the remote and nunchuck, and just didn't care for it. Isn't the point of the Wii to take advantage of the motion sensing controls? I've seen some reviews on gamefaqs.com from some definite video game nerds who seem to think the wheel is just a novelty and the Gamecube controller is the only "real" controller. I feel like telling those guys to buy an Xbox or a PS3 if they want a "real" controller. Of course, knowing those types, they probably have all systems.
Anyways, I think the wheel is a great way to control the game, it really feels natural. I feel I can drift so much better than I could with a Gamecube style controller.
My only complaint is I feel like I'm starting to get "Mario Kart Elbow" from jerking the controller up each time I go off a jump to do a trick.

Played for a few min tonight. I think the nunchuck controller is actually easier to use.
