Console Swap

I was thinking...and not sure how it would be stopped.

Lets say someone had an older Xbox, the one that always breaks, bad board, and no HDMI. Now lets say the went to a store and bought a new one, this one has the new chips, has the fixed problems, and a HDMI port.

Since both these machines look alike, couldn't someone just go out and buy a new system and then return it with the old console. Customer Service reps wouldn't notice such a difference. They just check to make sure everything is in it, they would see a console and assume it would be the correct one.

Re: Console Swap

The only thing stopping you is your morals. It's technically possible, depending on who you return it to that they could notice, since there are differences. The chance of that happening is probably slim if you return it to Wal-Mart or someplace like that.

And I, Bruno, will dive 1,000 feet into a block of cement. On my head, yet!

Right, morals...

Actually, I wasn't thinking of doing it, but it did pop into my head. I was surprised I hadn't heard of it before.

It's technically possible but sometimes they check the serial number on the box vs the machine. Not to mention is would be highly immoral, but that's just me.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Re: Console Swap

Actually what got me thinking of it was I was willing to buy a new one until my other one comes back fixed and then just return the new one I bought. Thats why brought the thought of what if someone swapped the consoles, unless looking at the ports or checking serial numbers, you wouldn't know.

Maybe why the elite came out!

Re: Console Swap

I'm guessing they're probably supposed to check the serial number on the actual console, but I'm sure a lot of employees wouldn't.

Re: Console Swap

Well my other thought was to hang onto the new one and then just sell the old one on ebay again. Which is what I think i might do. The new premiums have had no issue right? The elite is way to expensive. I would like a PS3 instead, but same issue there, too expensive.

Or just wait for your old one to get fixed?

Seriously, I hope you don't follow through with your 'Hypothetical' question.

I just want to say I don't support those actions. You know me and hope you would think I have better morals than that. It was just a thought that I'm surprised I haven't seen much discussion on. Maybe I was too immoral to post such a topic, and for that I apologize.

Possibly a deletion of the topic might be best then. Didn't mean to support crime for any young kids that read this board.

Nope, I think I decided to finance a PS3 with my Best Buy Card, and will be selling the 360 back on ebay. Besides I can then dowload the new rosters with a simple thumbstick flash drive instead of having to buy a transfer kit.

And...I can use my HDMI cable that I purchased.

I'm gonna try this with the Butterfinger bar I bought over lunch. Eat the candy bar, replace it with...um...something else.

Maybe the next person might actually enjoy the butterfinger candy bar.

I'm amused that this thread got rated.

I ended up just getting the PS3. I caved, I know, but there were so many more benefits for me than hanging on to my crappy 360!

Now I need to sell it! At least it works and theres a game and rechargeable battery with it.

Again, sorry for bringing up a sore subject. It was not my intention to promote such an act, just astonished that Microsoft didn't think that through while releasing a revamped version with the same console look.

Re: Console Swap

I had friends in school that did this ALL the time... If the PS2 broke, just buy another, swap it then return...

Very immoral... but hey...

I know my cousin ran into problems at best buy when she wanted to return a Wii that didn't work right out of the box. They wouldn't do anything with it because the box had been opened. They made her go through Nintendo to get things solved.
