In case some of you are new to college football, hiring a good staff and recruiting great players is part of coaching.
With that said I'm glad we have Paul Rhoads as our coach and have faith he will field good teams in the future. great post. GC isn't as bad as everyone on here would like to believe he is. He is the head football coach of a top 5 undefeated football team. They have the inside track to a BCS game and an SEC championship in his 2nd year as coach. Thats COY worthy no matter the circumstances.

Based on the record alone, he's a candidate for COY. Unfortunately, that might happen as sometimes the voters only look at the winning records without understanding what behind the scene.
Again and again: there is a reason why Bolt and McFarland are not the coordinators at AU. And I believe 95% of the Fanatics here know it.
And GC is not winning with TT's players: Cam Newton redshirted after transferring from UF.
GC is a good CEO but not a good coach.

IS it impossible to get competent assistants to work at ISU or was the Chiz negligent (or worse) in discharging his obligations to ISU?

Going back to when Chizik was first hired, and hiring his OC and DC, there was a Chizik interview out there (I believe on cyclones.com) where he admitted that he, McF, and Bolt were friends that went WAY back, and they created a pact that if one of them were hired as HC, that person would bring the other two guys on staff in important roles. Unfortunately for ISU, we were the suckers by which Chizzlestick was able to fulfill the pact.
By the way, CPR's hiring of Wally Burnham, one of the most highly "thought-of" DCs out there, is absolute proof that it's not impossible to bring in quality DCs to ISU.
Just proof that...
- When Gene 100% wants something, he will get it
- Gene can be successful when he doesn't hire over matched personnel as assistants
- Talent at Auburn >>>>>>>> talent at ISU
Gene is a very good coach. He is also a jerk. A significant number of good coaches are jerks. I would gladly take a winning jerk over a losing nice guy.
Of course you take a winning jerk (remember Larry Eustachy), Gene was a losing jerk and we're better off without him. Period.

He proved here that he's not a great coach.
The leading candidate for COY currently should be Kirk Ferentz or Lane Kiffin.

The 5 teams that USC has beaten this year have a cumulative record of 12-21, two of which have 1 win apiece (Minnesota and Washington St), and debate all you want about whether Cal or Hawaii is their "best win" this year so far. I don't care whether they lost "last second" to both Washington and Stanford - close losses don't win you COY awards.
Considering who all USC has left on their schedule, there's always a chance (albeit slim) that they don't win another game the rest of the way.

Re: Leading candidate for NCAA FB coach of the year
Any coach can take top notch talent, win games, and compete for conference championships. A good/great coach can take average players and achieve extraordinary results. Chizik had a chance to do that when he was at ISU, and we all saw his results.
Having said that, that doesn't mean he won't get consideration for COY, since awards like this are usually reserved for teams from power conferences with great records.

Drop mean Gene in the middle of that **** storm and he goes 0-fer. Just sayin'.

He ended up firing both of those guys didn't he? Rumor was he was talking to Gus Malzahn and Paul Rhoads as replacements. I'm not trying to pump up Chizik here, just agreeing with the original post that he's a leading candidate for COY at this point in the season.

When you don't consider anyone else and just hire Goober and Gomer, it's negligence.
