Sounds like this girl is a head case. Must've been good at something if after about 2 years he's still trying to connect with her.

If that last linked story is correct, that wouldn't be related. He might just be a nice kid that heard she was having troubles and said something to be nice.

We don't really know, but the different possibilities for this story make it look like there is a good chance it's not a thuggish story, and that's nice.
