We chose to air the 2011 BCS National Championship game on cable instead of OTA because 2010 saw a massive reduction of people opting to purchase cable packages and by offering one of our most prized assets (TV rights to that game and others) only on cable we assume that we not only kept viewers paying us for cable but also gained some.

You have put forth a quite intriquing theory. Could you please provide some statistics supporting your proposition, including a comparison of the income preserved by keeping cable subscribers compared to the advertising revenue lost by not showing the games to a wider audience?

Becasue in the long run, less people watching college FB isn't good for college FB??? Just a thought...
If I'm a stockholder of the Mickey Mouse Conglomerate, and ESPN could have increased viewership, and hence revenue by showing this game over broadcast TV, they need to spin it to me, and explain why they are not trying to maximize return on my investment, as their fiduciary duty requires them to.
We live in the age of HDTV with subchannels. ESPN could have broadcast the games on an OTA subchannel and still preserved ABC's primetime programming. Everybody is happy.
I'm sure revenue was the primary motivation with respect to programming decisions. Apparently the caluclation went like this:
Revenue from BCS game on ESPN + Revenue from regular programming on ABC > Revenue from BCS game on ABC + Revenue from professional [bowling, figure skating, bull riding, etc.] on ESPN
