Re: Gene Chizik and Auburn Recruiting Tactics
Clergy can be audited just like normal people so their finances are not confidential.
Also, is Trooper Taylor the guy on the Auburn Sidelines in the National Championship game with his white hat on backwards and a really baggy sweatsuit? I was wondering who that guy was the whole game, from his appearance I really didn't think he was a coach.

Re: Gene Chizik and Auburn Recruiting Tactics
clergy are used as trusted confidants to players and recruits. they can advise players and gain their trust and vice versa. clergy can form relationships with 'non-profit' groups. boosters can make donations to non-profit groups. non-profit groups can influence players with those donations. further more, given the socio conditions of many young black men, having a person of influence - trusted influence, is very beneficial.
The article is poorly written and poorly tied together. He never ties the use of clergy and the use of non profits all together, rather, i think, uses them as separate examples. It is interesting that Chizik thought it was so necessary to use this person in an official ops position. Operations paid by boosters. Non profit. Read again about Williams at Auburn. It says that Lowder controlled him (Lowder a big time booster to Auburn's athletic department - millions of dollars). Given Williams is on staff at Auburn and that he is likely getting compensated way more than he'd be compensated for normal clergy work, the clergy would have no incentive other than turning an eye to the fraud. It would obviously take the right person to get this accomplished - explaining why Chizik wanted Williams to stay at Auburn and why he hand-picked his clergy from Texas. They both knew the game.
Who knows. But would be interesting to see this dug into further.

But if someone hands a priest a case with $10K in it during a confession and the priest hands that case to someone else there's nothing that's going to ever appear in the priest's audit. The nice thing is that he doesn't have to talk about it, because he's clergy and can claim confidentiality

Re: Gene Chizik and Auburn Recruiting Tactics
It's confidential/untraceable because interactions between a college athlete and his "spiritual adviser" are not able to be released to the public via the freedom of information act.
Interactions between a student and a university are able to be investigated through the freedom of information act should it be taken to court, or if the student gives permission for the school to release said information.

Re: Gene Chizik and Auburn Recruiting Tactics
Wow. Chiz is a *********. Getting booster funded 'spiritual advisors' to game the system? And I thought the reggie bush situation was bad. Auburn might as well change its mascot to a mustang.
Edit: or a cheetah. But mustang is more subtle. But cheetah is funnier.

Re: Gene Chizik and Auburn Recruiting Tactics
Good article, the author has done a lot of research to back up the premise that some "spiritual leaders" in college programs like Auburn may be using their position in the clergy to funnel money from big donors to players. Makes sense in the Auburn situation with Cam and his dad. All too common for some people to use "their faith" to promote themselves and make big money. We're probably lucky Chiz left not only because we got CPR, but Chiz and his team spiritual adviser may well have got ISU in deep trouble with the NCAA. While the NCAA may ignore the situation at Auburn, is there any doubt they would jump at the chance to make an example of an also ran program like ISU?
