Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop
Pretty obvious that he couldn't manage players. That's not a player problem. That is a coach problem. But I'm glad he's there.

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop
Mac was a square peg in a round hole conference at ISU. He may be a real quality square peg but it didn't really matter. I wouldn't change a thing because I'm happy where we are. The path was a *****, I'll admit.

Wow - I'd love to see this guy applying for BCS job and then the AD says "I don't think you'll like it" Seems like a cheap shot for BCS schools coaches That might, MIGHT, have a little bit of merit if his boss wasn't cashing a bigger check at a mid-major than he was at a BCS school. What a dumb-*** comment.

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop
I'm sure Coach K and Roy Williams dream of going to a mid major so they can just coach.

I am also glad that he's there, so we're together on that.

Fred was dealing firsthand with certified agents for the most part in the NBA, not with AAU coaches and players' parents trying to exploit their kids to make some money at the college level. There is a significant difference.

Lets just put it bluntly: Mac is a control freak. Unless you have unbelievable people skills to help offset that, you probably aren't cut out for coaching in a bcs league.

Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop
I thought the whole theme of the article was the McD couldn't handle it. Which is totally true, he was unprepaired for the challenge ahead of him. Now he is out of the BCS conference spotlight where he can shine a little dimmer and be ok. "It’s a place where you can be successful and at the same time enjoy it. I’m not sure the coaches at BCS schools are truly loving their job. They love it twice a month when that paycheck comes in. Or, their wives love it."
If that were the case, it probably wouldv'e been a lot harder to get Otz to stay, I guess he just dreams a little bigger. "The arenas and budgets and salaries are smaller."
Yeah the budget may be smaller but didn't he get 900k a year to go there? I know he didn't make that much here and the Qwest center capacity is 18,300. I don't know that many BCS level arenas that look like that.
I might be biased living in Omaha, but all Shatel puts out is pure crap to be sucked up by the homers. In closing, Thanks Creighton.
P.S. Where is the hilltop... Omaha is in a valley! Duh, winner!

Oh, wait, we are, because it is.
Carry on. Nice post. -

Really this has been a win win situation for everyone(and that doesn't happen often).

“ When we got to the Big 12 level, there wasn’t quite as much coaching, not the way Mac likes to coach. We recruited the type of player we thought we needed to win in the Big 12, and not necessarily the type of kid coach likes to coach.
“To compete at that high level, you need some of the best athletes in America. You have to be more of a manager, to an extent.”

If we were paying McD a million a year, he should have been able to coach egos.
If he is talking about Jiri, Rashon, Gilstrap, Colvin, Dendy, Brackins and others, his assistant did them no favors by telling all.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Shatel: McDermott is Happy on the Hilltop
I'm happy for Mac and happy for ISU. The situation worked out good for both sides. Say what you want about Mac's coaching, he's a stand-up person, and I wish him and Creighton the best (except when they're playing us).
