NC State to hire Mark Gottfried

NC State will be holding a press conference at 5pm EDT to announce a hire for the head coach position to replace Sidney Lowe. The word is NC State has hired Mark Gottfried (former Alabama HC) as the new basketball coach. I've heard that the contract is $2.8 million/yr*** (see edit below).

That hire was out of right field for the Wolfpack fans around here. I think people are tentatively happy with the hire, but they're mostly happy the search is over.

EDIT #2: I've been corrected on the contract value. It is $1.2 mil./yr.

This has been a year when the "hot" mid-major coaches didn't jump ship as they have in the past, thus opening up jobs for people like Gottfried.

Horrible hire IMO. Especially for that money. If people thought Wayne Morgan ran an undisciplined team, you should have watched Bama the last couple years he was there. They played a horrible 2-3 zone defense that was shredded on a nightly basis and they chuck up threes on offense.

Now, he's a good recruiter so there's always hope for someone if he can get the players. Who knows, maybe he's had time to reflect and learn from his mistakes. The salary seems ridiculous, though. I'd be disappointed if we hired him, I'm sure NC State fan isn't too pleased.

Two embarrasing coaching searches in a row for NC St basketball. I think they just wanted to find a guy who wouldn't say no to them. If they are really paying Mark Gottfried $2.8M per year that is ridiculous. That's Calipari type money.

I heard that his assistant coach budget doesn't have many limits so maybe they'll get some Bobby Lutz - caliber assistant coaches in there.

Shocka Smart was offered 2 mil - he declined in favor of a $1.2 mil contract w. VCU

Gregg Marshall was offered 1.6 mil - he played hardball and is stuck w/ his $800,000 contract w/ Wichita State.

I'm not sure if there were other offers.

Crap, I would have taken the job for a third of that and would have had the same amount of success vs. Duke and UNC...none.
