I don't think that it is a big deal that he took the easy way out by going to carolina. Good for him that he made that decision.
The problem, and for some reason I am not amazed that there are people still on here defending the way he did it. The oh my God he used to say hi to me in the hallway set is pretty sad...
The FACT is that the university is a HUGE part of the Ames community. He is obviously a bright kid, at least everyone says he is.
Being a bright kid, he knew that if he eliminated Iowa State from his list, he would not have a very big turnout for his announcement. How would it look on the U if there were just a couple hundred people there instead of the 1000 + that did show up?
It is about a HB brand, and he needed the crowd to offer legitimacy to it. 300 students would not have been good, thousands from the community was a better statement. He was very lucky that Ames residents are classy enough to not let their feelings show.
The saddest part, and the biggest indictment of all of this, is on his mom. She KNEW what he was doing, and she KNEW that it would make a lot of people upset. Her complicity in all of this is the most disturbing part. I heard she was rocking a new ride shortly thereafter, so she probably did not really care.
The only thing that Barnes did that was low class was to not alert the Iowa State University coaching staff the minute he wasn't going to select them. He owed them that courtesy as good as they were to him. Not every recruit owes the coaches he isn't selecting a verbal no ahead of time; in Barnes' case, he did. He knew by the time that he'd gone to UNC on his official that he probably wasn't going to ISU and he should have cut ISU loose so that they could focus their recruiting efforts on someone else. I think he just did that so he didn't have to face people in the Ames community giving him a hard time about not staying home. But in the end, he's a kid and a kid that practices what most people do: look out for number 1.
Nothing else he did was low class, it was simply a kid soaking up the spotlight.
I am in agreement with several others on the board, and cannot understand all the love for a UNC Tarheel on an ISU fan board. I had not heard that he was at the ISU practice facility the night before the Skype show. That makes it even worse.
Facts are facts. hb used ISU for all he could, as long as he could, and gave nothing back. Personally, I am glad he is not on ISU's team. If him staying meant McD staying, then we are much better off without both of them.
The continued worship for and defense of an individual who chose not to be one of us, proud Iowa Staters, still astounds me. His success isn't your success. Let's support and cheer for who we are, not who we are not. Personally, I cheer like heck for that Bubu Palo kid. Seems like quite the young gentleman, handles himself with class, and gives his all for ISU.
