Re: Even ESPN thinks Mizzou made a mistake

Mizzou can compete. They are a competitive Big 12 team, and it isn't like the SEC is going to be light years better than the Big 12, particularly when you take into account the Big 12 is a round robin league and they can miss a power team or two playing in SEC divisions.

But I have yet to meet a MU fan who believes they will be a top team in that league. Because they won't. They weren't a factor in the Big 12 and that won't change just by changing leagues.

Competetively, their recruiting is going to suffer. IMO, this is the biggest issue facing Mizzou in this whole move. Location wise, they just made themselves the Ames, IA of the SEC. It is not going to be easy to recruit to Missouri at all when they are competing with everyone else in the SEC.

I don't know enough about it to say how similar it is, but Arkansas has run wide open spread-type offenses in the past in the SEC with success. I don't see any reason why Mizzou can't, unless they stop getting the athletes needed. I think right now they have good enough athletes to be competitive with all but maybe the elite in any given year.

OK. I grew up in Missouri, and I see quite a few posters referring to Missourians as hillbillies, and feel I have the credibility and responsibility to respond to that stereotype.

    Spot on, lads. Carry on.

Missouri is going to become the ISU of the SEC and just have to live with picking off recruits the big schools don't want. Have fun with that!

Re: Even ESPN thinks Mizzou made a mistake

The issue will be recruiting in the long run for Miz-zoo. IMO, they are going to have a hell of a time getting top notch recruits in SEC territory to the "island" which is the state of Missouri. I agree with an earlier post, MU just became Ames, IA in the SEC. Getting top recruits or even middle of the road guys over the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, USC, Arkansas is going to be incredibly tough. In a couple of years this could get real-real bad for them, will they freak out? Oh yes....

They are light years better than the "traditional" Big 12 North.

Good point. The competition on the field, athletic budget, athletic revenues and recruiting will be similar to our new 10 team league this year where 6/10 teams are in Texas/Oklahoma.

It will be quite a bit different than the Big 8 and and Big 12 North.

ISU needs the Big 12 to add Louisville and another good but not incredible school to avoid the same situation.

Not sure why anyone would move into a conference where you end up with the stricter academic standards and your new conference mates are notorious for cheating.

Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

The SEC isn't any tougher than the Big 12, at least not this season, and should be very comparable to the 10-team Big 12 going forward. Definitely will be tougher than the old Big 12 North though.

Re: Even ESPN thinks Mizzou made a mistake

Year in and year out the SEC is a tougher league then the Big XII. Sure the Big XII has years every so often where top to bottom it is better then the SEC but it isn't with any kind or regularity. Mizzou has just signed up to be the punching bag for the SEC.

Look at Mizzou's historical records against the strongest Big 8/Big XII teams and you will understand the uphill battle these hillbillies are facing...

    vs. Nebraska 33-59-3
    vs. Oklahoma 24-66-5
    vs. Texas 3-16-0

How many teams in the last decade in the SEC are of the same caliber as those 3 schools? Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Florida, and Georgia. How many SEC schools are currently just a step below that level? Tennessee, Arkansas, and South Carolina.

There are 8 teams right there that would beat Mizzou more often then not.

Keep in mind... we are talking about a Mizzou program that has such embarrassing fans that they continually got picked over by bowl games because their fans fail to show up. How many losing seasons in the SEC will it take for their fan support to dry up, donations to dry up, and recruiting to dry up? Mizzou is going to be in a world of hurt in a few years and they will have nobody else to blame but themselves. They felt like they always got the short end of the stick in the Big XII but really who can they blame for that but themselves? They made poor coaching selections, their fans are as fair weather as they come, and for many years their administration put no emphasis on building a quality football program. Ineptitude has run rampant in Columbia for years and after a couple of decent seasons they all of a sudden think they are SEC worthy? The collapse of Mizzou athletics is going to be absolutely epic. Personally... I can't wait for their fanbase to meltdown at the Mizzou administration for this utterly idiotic move to the SEC.... yeah.... those same fans that are puffing out their chests right now demanding the move to the SEC. This comedy will be a gift that keeps on giving for years to come. Time for everyone to sit back and enjoy.

From 1960 to 2010 Missouri is:

    8-36-1 vs OU

Since the Inception of the Big 12

    2-7 vs OU
    1-7 vs UT
