Pretty sure that's been clear for a while. It's all about money, which makes me sad honestly.
Really look forward to that new San Diego State-UConn Rivalry...
Not to mention that now instead of just a marginal Big East, we still have a marginal Big East (after a few teams out of Uconn, Rutgers, Cincy, Louisville likely go to the ACC/Big 12), but we also have a marginal MWC, CUSA and the WAC was already on life support.
Four conferences have been pushed to the brink of existence by this now. Had the MWC not been aggressive it would have been wiped out and the schools would have gone back to the WAC. Even now I bet the WAC and MWC just merge again with LA Tech joining the CUSA. MWC added BSU, Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii only to lose BYU, Utah, BSU and SDSU instantly.
CUSA lost its best teams outside of Memphis and Southern Miss in UCF, SMU and Houston.
They've still got ECU as well, but you're point stands. The last three years we've seen 2 conferences (MWC and C-USA) look like they might be on the verge of becoming competitive with the lower-tier BCS conferences, only to be decimated by expansion in the BCS leagues. It's pretty sad.
You also missed TCU leaving MWC as well. It's kind of sad to think what that league could have become if teams had stayed put.
Good catch. MWC was already on Big East level before it was broke up, with Boise State, Nevada, Hawaii and Fresno State joining it would have passed the ACC. It was always better at the top than the ACC (for a good 6-7 years) but the depth was what needed to be built. SDSU being decent instead of a doormat and the four additions would have made it a 7th BCS conference whether it was acknowledged or not.
This is probably the best CUSA year ever so...break it up! haha
I have no doubt Nevada, Fresno State, Southern Miss, or somebody will build a legit winner outside the AQ leagues even though all the "BCS busters" outside Hawaii are officially in the club now. It'll always happen. Some will always embrace it and some will always hate on the little guy. Even though they keep losing their coach I think NIU or some other MAC team could even become a steady winner at some point.
