    North Dakota Fighting Sioux

School will continue using Fighting Sioux nickname - CNN.com

looks like they get to keep their name.
Personally, I think that's a bunch of BS that the NCAA is trying to pull.

From what I am told from a donor up at UND, the tribe wants them to keep their name, and the AD didn't really do anything to support the tribe.

I hate that some of these schools are being forced to have their names changed. What about the poor Cowboys, Pioneers, Patriots, and the Irish. Shouldn't they have to change also? ridiculous.

    Re: North Dakota Fighting Sioux

Great news. I can now buy one of their jerseys anytime.

I'm not a Native American and I don't pretend to understand why they've elected to make a big deal out of this. Winning national titles can't do anything but help get them in the national discourse. What's a greater offense here? Misdirected visibility of the Sioux Nation or no visibility?

Why stir up trouble if the tribe doesn't want to give their blessing?

The greater offense is that a bunch of suits in Indianapolis are selectively targeting schools in an effort to seem politically correct, while in reality, it's just a bullying tactic.

First they are Lakota tribes, not Sioux, even though everyone calls them Sioux.
I am somewhat familiar with this fight. The article is somewhat misleading as there are two tribes in ND. The first one, Spirit Lake tribe, all voted as a nation, to let the U of ND continue using the name. The other tribe, Standing Rock is being held hostage by the tribal council, which won't let a whole tribal vote be held. THEY APPEAR TO WANT MORE MONEY TO BE GIVEN TO THE TRIBAL COUNCIL MEMBERS.

The school is being held hostage by this tribe. Approval by BOTH tribes is required to continue to use the FIGHTING SIOUX name., just like the Florida Seminoles do.

Both tribes receive a totally free education at UND.

I have a good friend, who has lived in Grand forks, ND area for over 30 yrs and has kept me informed of the whole sad story. He and I have been to BB and Hockey games there. If you think the ISU-IOWA football game is big, you ought to see the rivalry of the UND-Minnesota hockey games. Two hockey games at each site sometimes twice a year.

I made the mistake of saying I would come up to see a men's hockey game against Minn, the same day Bobby Knight brought his first Texas Tech team to Ames. I had already seen a women's hockey game up there on a previous visit and was told the rivalry between Minn and UND was huge. IT WAS. The FULL plane from Minneapolis to Grand Forks on Thursday before the Friday and Saturday games were all Minn hockey fans. The series was a sellout in a better than pro hockey arena, built by a big deceased donor. He was alive when the bruhaha started over the FIGHTING SIOUX name started and made sure the the words FIGHTING SIOUX are everywhere. IN THE SIGNS, IN THE FLOOR TILE, IN THE WALL TILES, ANYWHERE YOU LOOKED.
We got tickets from a friend who worked at the airport and had connections, but only for one of the two nights as they are very expensive and in high demand. The teams split this weekend series and played another series later in the season in Minn.

For the sake of consistency, the NCAA needs to move from Indianapolis unless the city changes its name.

    Re: North Dakota Fighting Sioux

This fight has been going on for years and I've never understood why the tribes are upset about this. Its neither "hostile or abusive" to the tribes. Its the "Fighting Sioux" and if anything pays homage to the Sioux who put up one hell of a fight in the second half of the 19th century.

Also, the University would lose the trust fund set up to pay for operating expenses at Engelstad Arena. I believe the trust fund is forfeited if UND goes by another name other than Fighting Sioux. They wouldn't be able to maintain or keep the lights on in that awesome arena, which would be a damn shame.

We're gonna have to get LakesBison on here to get his opinion of the enemy.
Can someone find him and pull him away from a drinking game is probably dominating right now, and ask him about this?

That is actually inaccurate. The "Sioux" are comprised of Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota divisions. The North Dakota tribes are generally Dakota, including the Spirit Lake Tribe. The Lakota tribes are generally in western South Dakota.
