Re: Coaching vacancies at Illinois and Kstate - Who do they hire?

Besides a push for Lon Kruger, wouldn't Gregg Marshall be the best option?

Marshall just signed an extension at Wichita. Sounds like he wanted a lot for the job at South Carolina.

If Steve Fisher wasn't quite up there in age like he is, I think Illinois would suit him pretty well.

Re: Coaching vacancies at Illinois and Kstate - Who do they hire?

KSU will probably go after Marshall. Doubt he leaves Wichita, but if he does, I see him ending up like McDermott. If Kruger hadn't just left UNLV, especially for a team in the Big 12, he would be the most logical choice for them. With Martin leaving mainly because of John Currie, I think they'll have a hard time getting a guy at the top of their list. My guess is that they end up with Tim Jankovich from Illinois State.

Illinois will probably get Groce. Definitely not a great hire for them, but he at least has some major conference experience and has won in the tournament. It would be extremely embarrassing for them to get publicly turned down by yet another mid-major coach.

Worst case, K-state goes after LE.

K-State was very interested in McDermott when Pollard swoped in to get him. I believe they had an offer on the table.

Jankovic makes a lot of sense for KState. HC experience and fairly successful, but has a ton of high major experience as an assistant and player - which happened to be K State.

With Doug coming back next year, there is absolutely, positively no way that McDermott leaves Creighton.

Funny you brought him up. My wife just asked about him after Missouri got beat in NCAA. I read an article about him 3 or so years aga and he was coaching a NBA
d-league team in San Antonio I believe. He claimed he was loving it due to lack of pressure.

He was the head coach of the Austin Toros, San Antonio's D-league team, from 07-10. I think he's now in the NBA on a staff somewhere.

Besides that, I'm thinking K-State would be a pay cut as well.

I have no idea why nobody is giving LE a shot, if I was an AD I would be asking around about him.

He's an assistant for the LA Lakers, and this article proves the ineptitude of Illinois' AD Mike Thomas...BVD Part Deux
