Cutting Computer Science

The University of Florida is dropping its computer science department to save $1.7 million. I bet that the University is continuing to fund Anthropology.

I read that they also increased the athletic budget by $2 million. It's probably more complicated behind the scenes, but the appearance of that doesn't look too good to me. This seems like one of the the worst choices you could make for cutting a department in this job market.

Misleading title and article (Note: it is actually an iReport and not a cnn article). What they are actually doing is merging their Computer & Information Science and Engineering (CISE) department into their ECE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) deparment. They are not eliminating any faculty. They will still offer a Computer Science undergraduate degree (through LAS, not engineering) and are moving faculty who wish to stay in CISE (i.e., not engineering focused) to focus on undergraduate education in that major.

Way overblown.

I don't think it's that overblown. This is the article I read:

Cutting the graduate and research programs and cutting TA funding is a big deal and makes their Computer Science department much weaker.

You would think they would cut a dept where you have no chance of getting a job after college like history, psychology, art.

show me a liberal arts and science college mission statement that includes 'getting a job' in said statement. Never has, never will.

here is one for starters:

Mission Statement for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Iowa State University

Regarding Florida, I'm guessing consolidation of offerings amongst state schools is a GOOD thing. I.e. if you want to study computer science, Florida State is the state school to offer said focus.
