Football recruiting question

Why is it that a number of schools (i.e. Duke, Wake forest) get decent recruiting classes (rating wise) each year and yet year after year are not good? Yet you have teams like ISU and K-State which you could argue struggle to get a decent recruiting class year after year.

I see a university's physical location, academic standards playing a part in this but there has to be more than that....

Not much talent in the state of Iowa. There is no talent location on the east coast compared to our state. Wake Forest did have a couple good seasons and has been to a BCS bowl game.

Coaching and development in my opinion.

K-State was still in the same location with Ron Prince and while they did bring in an NFL caliber QB, they didn't win a lot.

The Crypt Keeper is just a good coach. Same with CPR. Both bring in a specific type of player to fit their systems and develop them. Snyder has also hit paydirt with a lot of good JuCos.

Duke and Wake Forest do not get decent recruiting classes each year. I do not put much faith in the recruiting services, but Rivals seems to be No.1 and neither Wake or Duke have what i would call decent classes each year. Just understand one high rated recruit can skew the ranking for one class, in particular if it is a small one. There are many other factors in their class ratings too, but I am not up to speed on most of them.

Location does mean a lot for schools and recruits. A lot of times teams will pull in a big recruit because he wants to stay close to home.

Look at the Texas schools. A lot of them rarely leave the state to fill out their recruiting classes. They just have so many more recruits to pull from whereas there are usually only a handful of D1 caliber players from the state of Iowa.

Once you get past the top 25 as far as rankings, it's a crap shoot really. There are a bunch of three star guys out there that make up the majority of classes and their career can range from Nothing to NFL so it really hard for the ranking to consistently show through. What you see is either staffs identifying and developing properly or not.

A lot of times you will hear about a low prestige non-BCS school pulling in a big recruit.

Then a year later, the kid isn't even in school any more.

A lot of you are saying location plays a factor in this. Considering the new teams and new geography of the BIG12 doesn't ISU location hurt it more than in that regard when we had Missouri, CU, NU?

I wouldn't say that because ISU is still in the same place which is not TX, CA, or FL. That's what they mean by location hurting. With or without those teams we were still the farthest north and it was still Ames. I don't think it is something that has hurt as more but location will always be against us.

Although the coaches at Duke and Wake Forest may have more gas than those in Iowa, the North Carolina taxation rates do not allow them to see the true value of their recruiting class stars. The same holds true for many schools in the Big 10 and Big East.

Those coaches in the red states are gonna run out of gas pretty darn quick. Those with yellow should be on alert for their coaches potentially "running out of gas."

I know you are speaking in generalities but I doubt Duke and Wake Forest are taking a lot of high risk kids.

Hopefully some of the highly ranked kids that are picking these schools over other east coast schools are doing so for the same reasons that we would want kids to pick ISU over the likes of K-state and Tech. They care about education and like the staffs/facilities/campus.

Agreed, I can't see those schools (especially Duke) taking a very talented, but completely stupid/risky recruit just to help the team. Duke actually does have standards when it comes to academics unlike most D1 programs.
