What does 'vacated of wins' really mean?

So I never understood this? OU got hit with this years ago, but when you look at our results from years ago it still says we lost. This penalty has never made sense to me.

What it means is every win from 1998 to 2012 is stricken from the record books. It does not mean that all their opponents are granted with those wins, it just means Penn St doesn't get to count those wins anymore. It also means that Joe Paterno has 111 fewer wins, which means he is now nowhere close to being the all time leader in wins by a coach (that belongs to Bobby Bowden now).

It's not like they forfeit the games. They just don't get credit for the wins in the record books. The other team still gets credit for the loss.

I think it means that those wins don't count towards the school record but doesn't mean the opponents get a victory.
In this case it also means Joe Paterno lost his record for career victories.

It might mean something to people in the institution, but they've already got all the benefit out of all of those wins so it's hard to think it does much.

This could be a fun project that someone with more time then I have should undertake...

Find all the vacated wins and then adjust all the records accordingly by making the vacated win a loss and the the corresponding loss a win. Turn that into a website and I guarantee you will have a lot of people interested in it.

Pretty much just a symbolic gesture to dethrone Paterno from the all-time wins crown.

Bingo. UMass went to the Final Four with Calipari, as did Memphis. So the NCAA made them take down the banners...BFD.

The Fab Five still made the title game two years in a row, even though there is no record of it. Vacated wins means zero. I think it's more to get Paterno off the top.

Well that seems silly. Bobby is a fake!
