Is College Football Hurting America?
With the balloon spending that is occuring in college football these days it makes me wonder if college football is hurting America..............
What if the schools were forced to reinvest 50% of revenues back into education at the institutions or somthing. Would that not then keep tuition costs from rising and keeping the youth of america out of massive debt obligations...........
Would those young professionals not then purchase homes helping to rebound the housing market then lifting some of the recesison burdon in the US...........
So are these pretty and new athletic structures and high payed coaches worth the recession........???............
Total PirateFace Guy thing but really .........

I don't even know where to begin with this post.
Do you know why I put up with this 'pitiful job', Mr. Donaghy, why I fetch these folks' lunches and clean up their barfs? Cause they make television. And more then jazz, or musical theater, or morbid obesity, television is the true American artform. -

college football is worth whatever pains result therein

It's a noble thought, but the blame is a little misdirected, I feel. It's easy to point at our head coaches who have million dollar salaries and say "Hey, where's my share?" Or the millions of dollars going into facility upgrades, etc. etc.
I feel it's a symptom of the growing income gap between the nation's wealthy and the poor, but it's sure not the cause.

The money it costs to build those structures is not buried inside the facilities. That money purchases materials and construction services. People provide those goods and services to the university, the university pays those people money, those people then spend the money on consumption or in business, etc. etc.

The state has pushed so hard for the athletic departments to operate entirely separately and independently from the general university funds now the OP wants to mingle the money again?
A good portion of the money that athletic departments are generating come from ticket sales and donations from boosters and media rights. If you take half of that money away and give it to the university's general fund you are going to seriously damage the product. How many people and media are going to take their money elsewhere? There are a lot of other entertainment options out there. You may just seriously damage athletic departments without giving much benefit to the universities.

College coaches deserve to be paid that much so they can trickle wealth down.

Re: Is College Football Hurting America?
Football is one fo the FEW things that MOST colleges do that actually MAKE MONEY.
It is not a perfect system but I have a hard time seeing any detriment to society.
Good example: OU Athletic department made $3M donation to one of their (non athletic related) academic programs a few years back.
