Alvarez getting $118.5k to coach the Rose Bowl
Barry Alvarez of Wisconsin Badgers to be paid $118,500 to coach Rose Bowl - ESPN
Question: why does this guy need to be paid anything extra to coach that game? Are they withholding his AD salary during the time that he's coaching the football team? Isn't the Wisconsin athletic department cutting back because there isn't enough money to go around?
They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson. -

How did he negotiate that?
This doesn't seem like a good idea.

He will also get $8,500, which is 10 percent of his athletic director salary. From the article

"Hey, Barry, as your Barry AD, I want to offer you $118k to coach and give $8k to be me. We can be Two."
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Yeah, this is odd, in my opinion. I think it could go a long ways to build goodwill in your fan base if he didn't do it for pay. Obviously he'll be working more than his normal duties, but I'm sure his Associate ADs could pick up the slack this month.

He's putting in the time a coach would put in so give him the money.

I don't understand the idea that he shouldn't be compensated for doing the job.
I think most people would expect to be compensated by their employer if they take on additional duties beyond their current roles.
Plus lets face it B1G is getting $17M plus for the game, i think the $118G will be easy to cover.

Um, I don't think Alvarez has a "good will" problem with the Badger fanbase....

Re: Alvarez getting $118.5k to coach the Rose Bowl
Personally I think it's cool that he's coaching the game, and I have absolutely no problem with the compensation. Who cares?? They made the Rose Bowl, let them worry about where they put their money. I'd want to be compensated if it were me also. I'll bet he's still doing his AD job at the same time, it's not like it just stopped....

how much is the coaching bonus the school would be giving out for even making the rose bowl, let alone winning it if their other coach hadn't left?
