I am sure it has something to do with trying to align themselves with the state's university system since it is a public school. I believe California has two streams of public college systems. One being the "California" system such as UCLA, UC-Berkley, UC-Irvine, etc and the other being the "state" designation such as Cal State-Fullerton, Cal State-LA, Cal State-Long Beach, etc.
