Finished 3rd. I was looking at the NCAA stats the other day, (trying to see how many missed 3 pointers would be a record, they didn't have "bad" records.) We were not ranked until February of that year and we were 6th before the tourney, one more win and we would of had a number 1 seed and the MSU game likely would have been for the title. ISU's greatest near miss, of course getting the shaft in elite eight game will always hurt.
Why do you say 8th? Why not 5th. Although I do agree it's a crock we didn't get a 1.
Although as it turns out, we weren't going to unseat MSU for a 1, so from a fan standpoint, we couldn't have got a much better situation - getting the #2 in the midwest region.
Let's face it, that year the championship game was effectively the ISU/MSU game. Tom Izzo even said as much.
I've been saying this time and time again since the 2000 season - you put way too much faith that the NCAA actually seeds the #2 seeds, at least back in 2000. The NCAA thought they were doing us a favor by placing us in Minneapolis, a city that's like only 250 miles from Ames, to guarantee that we at least made it into the Sweet 16. I'm thinking us being upset was one of the reasons the NCAA went to the "pod" system they currently use where the higher seeds tend to go to the city closest to them regardless of which bracket they were in. If they had the pod system back in 2000 we probably end up being the #1 seed in the West IMO (as then they couldn't put both #1 seeds in Indy and Minny back then).
What bothered me even more about that tournament was Wisconsin made the final four that year, and they were horrible.
I was home alone watching the game that day. Had the volume down on the TV and the radio up with Pete and Eric. I had so many phone calls after to make sure I was ok. has anyone checked this website out. We beat MSU quite often. SimMatchup College Basketball - Free NCAA Matchup and College Basketball Sim Games
I was watching a game with a friend from out east last year, and a horrid call was made. He made a comment about poor officiating, and I said "at least it wasn't a blarge." He knew exactly what I was talking about and said we got jobbed with that call. Although we came out on the short end of that game, ISU is responsible for an entry into the basketball lexicon. Not that I still don't get apoplectic when I think about that game... :)
i was about ready to cry after that game i am still mentally scared from watching that when i was 8
that game hurt...because you just knew we would have a basketball nat'l championship had that MSU game not been in the way.
