Excessive Celebrations
With all of the football I've watched today and yesterday, I'm sure every single one of them had at least one excessive celebration penalties after a touchdown, many games have multiples. I'm all for somebody being happy with scoring, but this stuff is too much. Spiking and diving and such is for the NFL. It is not allowed in college. We all know that. Each player knows that. But the players don't care that it puts their team in a hole on the kickoffs.
I'd really like to see more coaches go Mangino-like on their guys when they pull this crap. Their teammates should give them a beat-down for acting like you can't spell 'team' without 'me'. These self-promoting attitudes make me want to see them wrench an ankle when it happens (not career-ending - just a nice 'damn that hurt and I'm probably out a series' sort of wrench).
And automatically eject the endzone divers. I'd love to see one of them knock the wind outta themselves by landing a jump short sometime.
End of my tube1-is-no-fun-at-all rant.

You gotta admit that the USC flip was pretty flippin' sweet, though

Re: Excessive Celebrations
The flips/dives look neat - but I'm not a fan.
The rules against that stuff isn't really to thwart that act only...but thwart that act because the retaliation can be ugly.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
They need to apply a rule restricting celebrations in the NFL and you won't see a problem in college athletics. I agree, today has been particularily bad.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -
Re: Excessive Celebrations
I love the celebrations in bowl games. They should be a little more relaxed than regular season games. Im loving these celebrations. I guess to me nobody should be insulted by a sweet flip into the endzone.
Now the idiot for Illinois that tossed the football to the USC band member clearly should have been flagged. Anyone else who wants to celebrate with their teammates only or dive into the endzone should be allowed to.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
The bowls seem to usually be the worst because it's the culmination of the season. Plus, it's not like these guys are gonna get punished a ton - seeing how their seasons are done after these games.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
It would also be classic if the networks would refrain from showing the dives and taunting. Either not show the replay at all and not let Mr. Showboat get the highlight time, or blur out the guy when he does his self-promoting crap. Kind of like not giving the little kid attention when they do something bad.
If they can do such great flips, they should be on the gymnastics team. They celebrate those moves there.

i disagree. you just scored and should be allowed to celebrate whether it is spiking the ball or doing a flip, its called having fun and being excited.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
what is so insulting to you about the flips?
Didn't Curvey used to dive into the endzone?

I agree. Don't confuse hope for a plan. -
Re: Excessive Celebrations
Celebrate with the team, that's all i wanna see with celebrations...I love the stuff T.O. and Chad Johnson do in the NFL, but that is the NFL. In college, I just wanna see guys celebrate with their teammates, THE GUYS THAT GOT THEM in the ENDZONE must of the time...I am not talking premeditated stuff or dances, but just a team celebrating as a team for what the team did. That is what makes college football so much better than the pros. Its a last HURRAY for team sports and not so much a glorification of the individual.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
They have every right to be excited, but the taunting has to quit and the flips into the endzone are only to draw attentions to themselves.
The guys know what they do is a 15 yarder, its up to their coach to take care of it if they are going to be that stupid.

Re: Excessive Celebrations
I guess I view bowl games a lot differnetly than most. To me these games are much more 'for fun' as most all awards and all conf races have been decided.
This conversation should remind us all of how big the 'celebration" by UGA earlier this year really propelled them. That was a huge turning point in the season

I agree. I particularly like Magino's response to the 15 yarder his punt returner got earlier in the year.
I'm waiting for one of the showboaters to get hurt doing their flips or dives.

Didn't Curvey used to dive into the endzone? If they were legal, I wouldn't have an issue. But they are not, the players know that, and yet they still do it for their own self promotion even though they penalize their team 15 yards on the kickoff. It's the self-promotion that penalizes an entire team is what I dislike so much. False starts and holding happen in the course of a game. Sometimes pass interference needs to be done to save a certian score. These aren't penalties that one occurs with FULL KNOWLEDGE that the team would be penalized.
This just rubbed me the wrong way the past couple of days. And I haven't started a thread in sometime...
