And here we go again... though I agree with the end of your post gocubs, Lets just enjoy the win. People don't like the students complaining when they leave the game early/don't cheer enough, and the students don't like being told they aren't cheering properly. It's a vicious circle thats just going to make us all sick

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!

Re: cyclone alley

It should NOT need to be a battle we are all Cyclones. And no one is asking anyone to be quieter. Just some common sense.

It is sad when we are getting to the point that all you get is defiance when a lot of people are having problems with the behaviors and are only asking for minor changes for organized public behavior.

When it is getting to the point where people are wondering about not bringing their children that for seats you bought at a public game, and gave donations to get, then it is a problem.

It should not be a case of picking a battle, however, do not assume things can or will not change. Maybe they won't, but there is just as much chance they might.

Re: cyclone alley

I've just read through this entire topic. While it took 13 pages of childlike bickering to do so, eventually some feeble attempt at a conclusion was reached: education (especially early education) is the ONLY way to solve this. You are talking about changing an entire culture here, not just a set of rules or a cake recipe.

I will affirm what Flag Guy and superfan have both already said: individuals attempting to make a positive change in Cyclone Alley doesn't do a whit of good. The three of us have all done it together in a group (in both football and basketball games) and we have done it on our own. It doesn't work. Though I don't think it applies properly here, the "old dog, new tricks" line comes to mind. It is necessary to instill a proper Cyclone spirit when students first enter the university. Destination Iowa State is a great place to do that- that's where students learn the fight song and some of the cheers, where they are introduced to the ISUCFVMB, the cheerleaders, and Jeff Johnson. I'm a Cyclone Aide, in charge of organizing and running Destination Iowa State. I'm going to see if there's a way to add the "For I, For S" lyrics into the program just as we have the fight song. I'm even going to sate my own curiosity and spend time in the ISU Archives to find out if there even are lyrics to "Go Cyclones, GO" other than the title phrase. Unfortunately, though many of ISU's freshmen each year attend DIS, it is not the end-all be-all of eliminating undesirable activity from athletic events. That is a monumental task, and- quite frankly- not one that is ever likely to succeed.

Positive education and reinforcement is the best way to go forth with that, and all of you nice folks that have been ceaselessly whining and complaining for the last few hundred posts can even do something productive: learn the words to the school songs, and learn the chants that Cyclone Alley commonly does, and then stand up and DO them. LOUDLY. If you can get the genteel nobility in the regular seats (who have OBVIOUSLY never said a curse word in their lives, judging from posts in this thread) to join you, then most of the coliseum can easily drown out the comparatively small student sections. But this effort is most certainly on your heads as well as Cyclone Alley's: you have no right whatsoever to complain, children or not, if you don't care enough to do anything other than make empty verbal threats on an online message board.

I think we need to put an end to this discussion. Everything that can possibly be said right now has been said; usually a few dozen times. There's no sense in continuing to yammer on about it; instead , go out and do something about it. We're just getting into the heart of conference season, when attendence all around will be much higher. Now is the time to make a difference, if you feel a difference needs to be made.

Enveryone needs to do better. However, this is not about someone not knowing a cheer, or making points on message board.

Lets go back the basics. A respectfull polite request was mide by the AD and the Aliumni Association. Either it is going to be respected and followed, or not. Now it is in the hands of those to whom the request was made.

I'm simply saying it won't, and I don't understand why its some sort of megaissue.

I suspect half he CA people are there to party, they have been partying couple hours before, they are trying to impress each other, they are looking for a good heckling time, they are enjoying themselves, they really do not like the other team, they have lots of energy, they do not care about fans outside their group, and they do not care what other people think of them. By having a large group of similar thinking people, sitting together, you get what you get: enthusiasm, lewd comments, craziness. Is that so bad?

If the above is true, it will not change this year in the last six home games. It is probably similar atmosphere in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

It's more subdued than at the football games, that's for sure.

Re: cyclone alley

Wesley fair point and I think you are accurate.

If this is correct, the university will have to decide if this is how they want to be represented. They may say enthusiasm and craziness is good. Lewd could be one that is evaluated.

Re: cyclone alley

Here is an interesting article from 2004 concerning a similar problem at the University of Maryland. I wonder if it was ever resolved.

The people here saying that the team and head coach need to get involved share the same perspective as the author of the article.

Yes, but it should be pointed out that was going on at Maryland was far worse than dropping an F-bomb. Fans were making lewd comments to J.J. Reddick pertaining to having sex with his sister; really nasty stuff. Some also got a hold of his cell phone number and continued the harassment through calls and messages.
