How badly does ISU want a winning program?

With the whole Sampson issue going down at IU. It begs the question whether a school like ISU would hire a person like Sampson with all his baggage. You know he will be coaching again if he is actually fired, but what kind of school would take him and do you think ISU is one of those places?

ISU would never hire a coach with that much baggage. We have enough problems.

Harriet Michaels: Do you actually like haggis?
Charlie Mackenzie: No, I think it's repellent in every way. In fact, I think most Scottish cuisine is based on a dare.

Oh ISU's been down that road a few times. Look at the Donnie Duncan and Jim Criener years in football and not long ago Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy in Basketball. Hey I know we never got caught for anything with Tim and Larry, but neither one of those guys were alter boys.

We don't want to go there.

I don't think JP's THAT desperate to win immediately. After all, look at the guys he's hired/extended during his tenure - Chizik, McDermott, Fennely, and Sanderson. All highly respectable, successful coaches who are more interested in taking time making sure things are done the right way instead of taking short cuts. I'm not sure JP would be interested in hiring someone who has anywhere close to the same kind of baggage that Sampson has.

I agree with you guys, why would anyone want to put that pressure on himself. By the way any AD that hires Sampson is out the second he trips up again.

Floyd has never been caught, but there's a reason he never stays in any job longer than 3-5 years.

I don't want anyone other than the guy who is coaching the Cyclones right now. Sampson will make a great coach for some midmajor or crap high major with little morals.

This really begs the question whether he should even be allowed to coach again at any level?...

To directly address one portion of your post: You don't build good programs based on crooked coaches. You can maybe win for a couple years, but that's about it.

Re: How badly does ISU want a winning program?

When Sampson was hired at IU they faced very small sanctions against them. If the NCAA would have come out and said no NCAA for 6 years or so plus lose 2 scholorships for each year I don't think IU would have hired him. Now if he would have stayed at OU they should also face same sort of penalty. It may ruin someones career if they get caught but if you play with fire you're gonna get burned. It might help with those who cheat. Besides when you make a million + a year, if he was smart with money he shouldn't have to work again, but if he doesn't coach I am sure one of the networks will give him a nice job.

We're already on the NCAA's hit-list. We don't need another reason for them to put us under the mocroscope.

I would be very disappointed if we hired a "dishonest" or "crooked" coach, especially if it was known about before the hire.

Winning isn't everything.

Be honest, nobody that's winning is entirely clean.
