Re: So is Frank Martin still the worst coach ever?

I guess you have pretty high standards to call a team with 21 wins mediocre. I guess it must take at least 25 wins to be halfway decent for you, huh?

Re: So is Frank Martin still the worst coach ever?

Martin gets no credit for coaching and pushing Beasley, Walker, et al to advance from great high school to great college players? Remember, this team is very young. They also have beaten two teams, KU and USC, who have more "talent" than they do. Martin gets no credit for that?
Their defensive intensity, plus their rebounding and blocking out, signals to me a team well-schooled on the fundamentals. The entire team plays within themselves - that's a reflection on Martin.
BTW, the most heralded freshman coming in wasn't Beasley - it was Mayo, who's had a "disappointing" season according to the announcers tonight. Maybe Beasley had the advantage in who was coaching him.

For K State to have the season that they did, with the players that they have makes Martin anything but coach of the year
This makes no sense at all. Mayo was the one that got all the hype coming into the year and USC will have just as many, if not more NBA players than K-State will.

K-State lost 11 games, 8 of them to tournament teams. Both teams started off in the top 20 and both finished with the same # of losses.

I have to say that I agree with your post. Next year in his third year as head coach, if Gmac gets us to a third place finish in the BIG12 and we have 21 wins AND we beat a higher seeded team in THE NCAA tournament, we'll all be so giddy we'll be peeing our pants. And we're raking this guy over the coals because he "isn't a good coach". Sounds a little ******** to me brotha's....

The last year Morgan coached he had one heck of a guard court in Tinsley and Blalock and since he didn't coach and run the show like he should have, that whole season about did me in. Martin is showing faults as a first year coach, but I'd say he's keeping whose ever players they are pretty close to the nest. Give him a break.

Re: So is Frank Martin still the worst coach ever?

You can tell K-State is coached well by how they manage the game on both ends of the floor. If they weren't coached well, they would looking like ISU did when Wayne was coach. No discipline.

There is discipline on that K-State team and that is a direct reflection of Martin.

I HATE K-State and I think Martin is SLEEZE, but I can also see that he has had a positive impact on the way K-State plays. Some of you need to take your blinders off.

Pullen, Walker, and Beasley have one thing in common. They are freshman. Nothing is easy in college basketball with freshman, I don't care how good they are. Look at us with Craig Brackins. CB was a 5 star recruit and we saw first hand the struggles he went through. Winning 10 conference games and advancing in the NCAA tourney with 3 freshman leading you is a nice accomplishment from a new coach. Frank Martin isn't Roy Williams or anything but he's certainly not horrible. Time will tell but he's off to a nice start.

For a team like USC, 21-12 is mediocre. For a team like us, it is a good season. There is a difference.

Fact is, both teams are mediocre. They should be better with the talent level that they have.

I think you maybe right but I remember talk about Martin getting hired to keep Beasley and the rest of the class.

Re: So is Frank Martin still the worst coach ever?

" I think they would have done a lot better with a better and/or more experienced coach." No doubt they would have won more games with Huggins with the current players. The only problem with even considering with this is that Martin, Huggins, or Hill were the only three coaches K-State could begin to employ that this bunch of recruits would play for. Dalonte Hill recruited most of this freshman class and they were going to play where ever he was coaching. He was their old AAU coach and they knew and trusted him.

Both USC and K-state played in really good conferences this year and did very well. Yes they have good players, and they need to, to compete well in those two conferences. Winning 2 out of every 3 is not mediocre. If those players stay another year or two, then you would expect even better results as sophomore's. Its hard to make the case they should/shouldn't have been better since they are all so young........

The consensus on this board is that KSU underperformed during their regular season. Nevertheless, most preseason polls had them picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 and they finished in third.
